NOTES
• Cal returns to Adamson Stadium to start PSAC West play following back-to-back road games. The Vulcans dropped a 26-23 overtime contest last week at No. 4 Shepherd. Meanwhile, Edinboro earned a 23-20 victory against Bloomsburg in overtime last week.

• Cal held a 23-13 lead with 10 minutes left to play in the fourth quarter before Shepherd later forced overtime with a 42-yard field goal as time expired. The Rams converted a game-winning 23-yard field goal in overtime after holding the Vulcans scoreless. Senior Noah Mitchell broke the all-time school record for passing yards and finished with 282 yards on 24-of-42 attempts in the contest. Junior JaQuae Jackson tied the single-game school mark with 13 receptions and totaled 179 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Junior Matt Tobey led the team with six tackles.

• The Vulcans have won the last 16 meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots. Cal has won eight-straight meetings in the series at Adamson Stadium with its last home loss to Edinboro coming in 2002.

• A former assistant at various NCAA levels, Jake Nulph is in his third year as head coach at Edinboro. The Fighting Scots closed the 2021 campaign with three-consecutive wins, including a 21-17 victory at IUP. Nulph served as an assistant coach with the Crimson Hawks in 2019 following a stint at Duquesne. Prior to that, he served as the defensive and special teams coordinator at Westminster from 2014-17.

• Edinboro tied for fifth in the preseason PSAC West poll following its strong finish last fall. Led by sophomore quarterback Isaac Bernard, the Fighting Scots pace the league in time of possession. He ranks fourth in the PSAC with 268.3 passing yards per game and sits among the top 10 in the country in completions per game. Bernard has totaled over 625 passing yards the last two weeks after finishing with less than 900 passing yards in eight games last season. Sophomore wide receiver Thaddeus Standfield ranks among the league leaders with 245 receiving yards on 17 catches, while classmate Mike Watkins has 173 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior Anfreenee Williams, an All-PSAC West selection in 2014, leads the team with 87 rushing yards on 29 carries. He totaled over 450 rushing yards and seven touchdowns last year. The Fighting Scots enter the weekend ranked second in the league in passing defense, allowing just 139.7 yards per game. Sophomore linebacker Clay Cunningham is tied for second in the PSAC with 34 total tackles. He made a staggering 15 stops with 2.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks in the season-opening win at Franklin Pierce. Freshman linebacker Wilfredo Diaz has made 21 stops this season and junior defensive back Malcolm Johnson has tallied 17 tackles and 5.0 TFL. Edinboro features one of the top punters in the league in sophomore Reed Martin, who has been named PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week twice this fall after being an All-PSAC West selection in 2021.

• Junior wide receiver JaQuae Jackson tied the single-game school record for receptions at Shepherd last week after the mark stood unmatched for over 50 years. He finished the game with 13 receptions for 179 yards and two touchdowns. A trio of wide receivers have tallied 12 catches in a game since 2011 before Jackson equaled the record of 13 receptions established by Pete Gialames in 1968 against Edinboro.

• Last week, senior quarterback Noah Mitchell broke the all-time school record for passing yards midway through the second quarter. He eclipsed the mark held by Sam Mannery for over three decades and looks to become the 18th player in league history to eclipse 9,000 passing yards in a career. Mitchell enters the weekend 41 pass attempts shy of breaking the school record of 1,283 attempts set by Mannery.

• The Vulcans played their first overtime game last week since Week 6 of the 2017 campaign when they suffered a 47-44 loss at Slippery Rock. In both contests, the home team was nationally-ranked and tied the score in the final minute of regulation before converting a walk-off field goal after holding Cal scoreless in overtime.

• Cal has lost back-to-back games for only the third time under seventh-year head coach Gary Dunn. Both losses by the Vulcans this season have been on the road, by five points or less and against teams that appeared in the 2021 NCAA Playoffs that combined for a 24-4 record last season. Cal last suffered consecutive defeats in the opening two weeks of the 2018 campaign.

• Through three weeks, the Vulcans rank second in the PSAC and among the top 15 in the country in rushing defense. Cal is allowing just 66.7 rushing yards per game and opponents are averaging 1.7 yards per attempt. Last week, the Vulcans limited Shepherd to only 14 rushing yards after the Rams entered the contest ranked ninth in the nation with 274.5 rushing yards per game.

• Sophomore wide receiver Malik Langley earned his first start of the season last week after making seven starts last season at Bloomsburg. Last year, he led the Huskies with 635 receiving yards on 24 catches with six touchdowns - highlighted by a 47-yard, game-winning score as time expired in Week 3. Langley has posted three receptions for 40 yards in his first campaign with the Vulcans.

• Last week, junior Gabe Miller and sophomore Josh Miller both earned a start at linebacker while at Shepherd. The Millers became the first pair of siblings to start the same game at Cal in recent program history (since 2008). Gabe and Josh both made two tackles in the contest and Josh recovered a fumble early in the fourth quarter. The brothers have combined for 26 tackles this season.

• Cal enters the weekend having scored in 199-consecutive games, which dates back to Week 11 of the 2003 campaign against Shippensburg. During the streak, the Vulcans scored at least one touchdown in 87-straight games from Week 8 in the 2011 season to Week 5 of the 2019 campaign.

• Freshman punter Clayton Rosensteel placed three of his six punts last week inside the Shepherd 20-yard line. Additionally, four of the six punts resulted in a fair catch by the Rams. A transfer from Clarion, Rosensteel ranks sixth in the PSAC with an average of 38.2 yards per punt this season. He played scholastically at nearby Ringgold and earned all-state honors at punter as a senior.

• In his second year as a starter, junior JaQuae Jackson is among the national leaders in multiple receiving categories. He currently leads NCAA Division II with 30 receptions and sits third in the country with 402 receiving yards. Additionally, Jackson paces the PSAC and is tied for third in the nation with five receiving touchdowns. He is the first player in recent program history to start a year with three-straight, 100-yard games.

• The Vulcans have won the opening game in PSAC West play 16-straight times with seven of those occasions being against Edinboro (2012-15, 2018-19, 2021). Cal last suffered a loss on the opening week of divisional play in 2004 at Clarion. Since 2005, the Vulcans have posted an impressive 47-5 record (.904) in PSAC West action while at Adamson Stadium.

• Cal has featured the same set of starting offensive linemen every game this fall with the unit anchored by a trio of seniors. The Vulcans lead the PSAC and sit fifth in the country in fewest tackles for loss allowed per game (2.67). Meanwhile, the Edinboro defense paces the league and ranks among the top 10 in the country with 9.3 TFL per game this year after finishing No. 139 of 163 teams in NCAA Division II last fall.
