California falls at Pitt-Johnstown, 2-0

Ouimet posts season-high seven saves; Teams combine for 29 shot attempts in the contest

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 10) – The California (PA) women's soccer team allowed a pair of goals in the opening 27 minutes on Saturday afternoon in a 2-0 loss at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 1-2-1 overall while playing its third road contest of the year. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats improve to 1-2-2 this season.

UPJ attempted a corner kick just 15 seconds into the game before being whistled for offsides twice in the opening three minutes. The Vulcans countered with a pair of shots on goal before the Mountain Cats took a 1-0 lead at the 13:56-mark on a goal by Haley Neidig, who led the league in assists last year. UPJ then tallied a trio of shot attempts in three minutes before stretching the lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Emily Esser, a two-time All-PSAC West selection.

Early in the second half, the Mountain Cats continued to apply pressure on the net with five shot attempts in a span of just over three minutes. Cal had an opportunity to cut into the deficit in 76th with a penalty kick, however, the UPJ goalkeeper made the save to help preserve the shutout.

Sophomore Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) collected seven saves while playing all 90 minutes on Saturday. She entered the contest having recorded back-to-back shutouts.

The Mountain Cats finished with a 17-12 shot advantage after both teams tallied nine shots in the second half. UPJ also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks in the contest.

Cal returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when it hosts Slippery Rock in divisional play at 6 p.m.
