CALIFORNIA (Aug. 31) – The California (PA) women's soccer team played to a 0-0 scoreless tie against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday night at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the tie, the Vulcans move to 0-1-1 overall and open divisional play with one point behind a 0-0-1 mark. Cal registered its first shutout in the series with IUP since the 2014 campaign. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks open the fall with a 0-0-1 record under first-year head coach Noreen Herlihy, who previously served 20 seasons as the head coach at Slippery Rock.
IUP threatened to take an early lead in the opening 10 minutes with a pair of shot attempts before later placing an attempt on goal in the 21st minute. The Vulcans threatened in the 32nd minute with a shot attempt by freshman
Reagan Bromiley (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) off a corner kick. Cal continued to pressure the net with a shot on goal by sophomore
Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) at the 34:36-mark before the Vulcans tallied another shot attempt in the 41st minute.
Early in the second half, the Crimson Hawks tallied a trio of shots within a four-minute span before Venezia posted another attempt at the 57:57-mark. The teams traded shot attempts in the 62nd minute before the Vulcans collected a corner kick off a blocked attempt in the 77th minute. IUP was issued a yellow card at the 86:27-mark before Cal placed a pair of shots on goal in the final three minutes of the game.
Sophomore
Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) recorded her third career shutout while making her season debut. She collected three saves after facing eight shots over 90 minutes.
Both teams finished with eight shot attempts, while the Vulcans held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when it travels to face Clarion in PSAC West play at 6 p.m.
