CALIFORNIA (Aug. 27) – Facing a two-set deficit on Saturday afternoon, the Vulcans rallied to force a decisive fifth set before earning a 3-2 win (21-25, 20-25, 25-21- 25-22, 15-9) over Bloomsburg on the final day of their season-opening invitational at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, the California (PA) volleyball team improves to 2-1 overall while playing opponents from three different leagues. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 1-2 this season.
Freshman
Oliwia Suboczewska (Wroclaw, Poland/SMW Wroclaw) and sophomore
Alexa Malloy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) tied for the team lead with 14 kills. Malloy matched her career high in kills while hitting at a .250 clip. Senior
Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) and sophomore
Sophia Johnson (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) both added nine kills in the victory. Freshmen
Ashley Barnes (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and
Adrianna Favata (Peoria, Ariz./Liberty) guided the offense with 29 and 19 assists, respectively.
Suboczewska recorded her first career double-double on Saturday, as she paced the team with 20 digs. Junior
Emily Buwawa (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) collected a career-high 16 digs after serving as the libero for the final four sets and senior
Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) finished with 13 digs in the win. Junior
Alayja Floyd (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) controlled the net with seven blocks (one solo) and sophomore
Allie Droneberger (North Beach, Md./Northern) added five blocks.
The Vulcans return to action next weekend when they play four matches at the Concord Classic from Sept. 2-3 in Athens, West Virginia.
