⅞GREENSBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on the final day of the regular season, falling 5-2 before suffering a 5-4 loss in extra innings.
With the losses, the Vulcans close the regular season with a 31-16 record behind a 16-12 mark in divisional play. Cal U finished in a tie with Mercyhurst for third place in the PSAC West standings yet earned the fourth seed for the PSAC Tournament by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Vulcans will face Millersville, the top seed from the PSAC East, in an opening-round elimination game on Wednesday, May 11. Meanwhile, Seton Hill sits at 31-17-1 overall with a 15-13 record in league action. The Griffins missed qualifying for the PSAC Tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2014.
In Game 1, Cal U was limited to a total of three hits in the 5-2 loss. Junior
Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) suffered the loss to fall to 6-2 this season. He allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings (70 pitches).
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by redshirt freshman second baseman
Santino Marra (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) following back-to-back walks with two outs. Seton Hill scored on a two-out error in the third before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth on another unearned run.
In the fifth, the Griffins claimed a 4-1 lead on a two-run homer by third baseman Jack Oberdorf before leaving runners on first and second. Seton Hill added an insurance run in the sixth on a fielder's choice, 5-1. The Vulcans answered in the top of the seventh with a solo home run by senior right fielder
Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), his eighth of the season.
Brogan now ranks alone for sixth all-time in school history with 23 home runs behind a combined 16 longballs over the last two years.
In Game 2, Cal U scored two runs in the top of the sixth before Seton Hill tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning. The teams were then held scoreless in the seventh to force extra innings. The Griffins later earned the walk-off victory with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Vulcans used seven different pitchers in the contest with redshirt freshman starter
Jaret Muckley (Green, Ohio/Green) taking a no-decision. He yielded three runs (all earned) on four hits in 4.1 innings (52 pitches). Senior
Zach Rohaley (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run (earned) while logging 0.1 inning of relief.
Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly before Seton Hill tied the score on a solo homer by Oberdorf, his third longball of the series, in the fourth. The Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior left fielder
Mike Landry (Jamison, Pa./La Salle). The Griffins answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, senior first baseman
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) started the inning with a hit by pitch and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Marra. Junior designated hitter
Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) then reached on a two-base error that allowed Marra to score from first, 4-3. Seton Hill responded with a solo homer by first baseman Max Mandler in the bottom of the sixth before Cal U made a pitching change to sophomore
Justin Naylor (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who retired the next three batters in order.
McCaskey shifted to the mound in the bottom of the seventh for his first relief appearance of the season. The Vulcans threatened in the eighth with runners on first and second before a fielder's choice ended the inning. Seton Hill opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back walks before Cal U made its second pitching change of the inning. Senior
Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) registered a strikeout of the next batter before a pair of fly-outs halted the threat.
In the ninth, the Griffins were issued a leadoff walk before a ground-out to first base advanced the runner into scoring position. Right fielder Brandon Kline then delivered the walk-off single to left center, 5-4.
Marra finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. McCaskey, who had his 15-game hitting streak snapped in Game 1, reached base twice (hit by pitch, single) and scored one run.
Cal U opens play in the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday against Millersville at 1 p.m. The Vulcans will be facing the Marauders in the league tournament for the sixth time since the 2011 season. The PSAC Tournament will be held at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania.
