SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (May 11) – The Vulcans were limited to just four hits and committed three errors on Wednesday afternoon while suffering a 10-0 run-rule loss to No. 21 Millersville in an elimination game in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament at Jack Critchfield Park.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team falls to 31-17 this season. Meanwhile, the Marauders improve to 38-12 overall and advance to face host Slippery Rock, as the league tournament converts to a double-elimination format following the initial day of play.
Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single with runners on the corners. The Marauders then scored three runs in the bottom of the second before leaving the bases loaded. Millersville started the second with a single before later collecting back-to-back RBI hits to extend the lead to 3-0. Shortstop Thomas Caufield – the league leader in RBI – then later delivered a two-out RBI single before the Marauders eventually stranded the bases loaded on a pop-up.
In the fourth, the Vulcans looked to answer with the bases loaded and one out before Millersville starting pitcher Ben Wilchacky recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. Cal U opened the fifth with leadoff single by senior left fielder
Mike Landry (Jamison, Pa./La Salle) before a double play erased Landry.
The Vulcans started the sixth with a leadoff single by senior third baseman
Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) and junior
Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) later drew a pinch-hit, two-out walk before a fly-out ended the inning. In the bottom half, Millersville stretched the lead to 9-0 by scoring five runs on six hits and three errors. The Marauders later forced the run-rule victory by scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
Senior starting pitcher
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakers) suffered the loss to fall to 6-1 this season. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and four walks over 5.1 innings (104 pitches). Wilchacky (9-1) earned the complete-game shutout victory, scattering four hits and four walks over 7.0 scoreless innings (106 pitches) while registering 10 strikeouts.
Landry collected half of the team's hits, finishing 2-for-3 in the losing effort. Conte and redshirt freshman second baseman
Santino Marra (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) both also reached base twice safely in the contest.
The Marauders have won four of the last five meetings against the Vulcans dating back to the 2012 season, all of which have been in the PSAC Tournament.
