Brosky tosses no-hitter in sweep of IUP

Senior records program's third no-hitter in last 15 years, allows three base runners over 7.0 innings

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 10) – Senior Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville) recorded the program's first no-hitter since 2014 on Sunday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team opened its series against IUP with a doubleheader sweep in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at Wild Things Park, winning 4-0 and 5-4.

With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 21-8 this season with a 6-4 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 13-14 overall behind a 5-5 record in conference action. IUP, which won only two games last spring, feature a first-year head coach in former MLB veteran reliever Steve Kline.

Brosky joined Randy Sturgill (2008) and Jack Dennis (2014) as the only pitchers in the last 15 years to register a no-hitter. He became the first pitcher since Sturgill on March 25, 2008 to toss a no-hitter while at home. Brosky improved to 5-2 this spring while issuing two walks and totaling seven strikeouts over 7.0 scoreless innings (88 pitches). The Brownsville product allowed just one base runner after the first inning and retired the last 11 batters he faced.

In the top of the first, Brosky allowed back to-back walks before a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. He then induced a pop-up to center field that was caught by senior shortstop Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) who fired home and senior catcher Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler) placed the tag on the runner attempting to score on the play.

Sophomore left fielder Jax Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) started the third with a double to right center and scored on a single by senior second baseman Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), 1-0. The leadoff batter for the Crimson Hawks reached in the fourth on a catcher's interference. After back-to-back fly-outs, the runner was erased on a caught stealing at second base.

Cal U extended the lead to 2-0 with a two-out rally in the fifth when Venezia scored from first on a double by freshman center fielder Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny). In the sixth, freshman first baseman Payton Conte (California, Pa./California) laced a double down the left-field line before Miller followed with an RBI single, 4-0.

In the seventh, Brosky forced a deep fly-out to right field to open the inning before Conte recorded an unassisted force-out at first base. He then completed the no-hitter with a strikeout of the IUP cleanup hitter.

Miler finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Conte and Crawford both recorded RBI doubles. McCaskey was held hitless for only the third time this season, as his 20-game hitting streak was snapped in Game 1 on Sunday. During his streak, he posted a .447 average with five homers, 26 RBI and 31 runs scored.

In Game 2, the Vulcans erased a 4-2 deficit by scoring three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the fourth. Conte started the inning with a walk before Miller followed with a single and junior designated hitter Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) later drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Crawford then reached on a hit by pitch and Venezia drew a walk to the score. McCaskey then followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, 5-4.

Sophomore Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) earned the victory to improve to 5-0 this year after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks in 4.0 innings (78 pitches). Senior Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) registered the save after retiring IUP in order in the seventh. Sophomore Brett Bobin (Wampum, Pa./Mohawk) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the victory.

Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by McCaskey and Conte. The Crimson Hawks cut the deficit in the second before scoring a pair of unearned runs in the third. IUP tied the score on a fielding error before taking a 3-2 lead on a bases-loaded walk. In the fourth, the Crimson Hawks stretched the lead with a two-out RBI double.

McCaskey registered a pair of RBI in the victory, marking his ninth multi-RBI game of the season.

The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Monday, April 11, with a doubleheader at IUP in PSAC West play, starting at 1 p.m.
