Baseball posts victory over Salem, 8-4

Four players record multi-hit games; Vulcans extend winning streak to eight games

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 22) – The Vulcans extended their winning streak to eight games after capturing an 8-4 victory over Salem on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at Wild Things Park.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 13-3 this season while posting an 8-3 record at home. Meanwhile, the Tigers fall to 5-19 overall after losing seven of their last eight contests.

Freshman Roman Gill (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) improved to 3-0 on the season while tossing 5.0 innings (69 pitches) on Tuesday. He allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits with no walks and collected three strikeouts in the victory. The Vulcans used four different relievers against Salem, as senior Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) - a 2021 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Second-Team selection - made his season debut by retiring the side in the sixth.

Cal U took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scattering five hits following a leaoff error. Following a single by freshman center fielder Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny), senior shortstop Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) lined an RBI triple to right center. Senior right fielder Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of Sacred Heart) collected an RBI single before senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) belted an opposite-field solo homer to right field, his fourth of the year.

The Tigers trimmed the deficit with two runs in the top of the fifth after having a runner thrown out at home by Brogan. The Vulcans responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning after Conte drew a bases-loaded walk and McCaskey scored on a balk, 6-2. The Vulcans stretched the lead in the seventh when freshman first baseman Payton Conte (California, Pa./California) delivered an RBI double to right field. Salem cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the eighth by scoring two runs on five hits in the inning. Cal U added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single to left center by McCaskey.

Crawford finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one walk, while McCaskey collected two hits, two RBI and two runs on Monday. Louden Conte finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored and Payton Conte tallied two hits in the victory.

Cal U is back in action on Friday, March 30, when it begins PSAC West play by hosting Gannon in a doubleheader at Wild Things Park, starting at 1 p.m.
