Vulcans will face Shepherd in semifinals of league tournament; Terrell reaches 500-point milestone

CALIFORNIA (March 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team featured balanced scoring on Wednesday evening with four players in double-digits while cruising to a 72-48 victory over Edinboro in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 23-4 this season behind a 12-1 mark at home. Cal U advances to face Shepherd – the third seed from the PSAC East – in the semifinals of the league tournament on Saturday, March 5, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots finish the year with a 14-12 overall record while making a 12th-straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament.

Junior Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter. She also added nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals while playing 34 minutes on Wednesday. Terrell became the 25th player in program history, and the ninth under head coach Jess Strom, to score 500 points in a season. The Reading native also now ranks sixth in single-season school history with 72 blocks while becoming only the second player in the last 19 years to eclipse 70 blocks in a campaign.

Fellow junior Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) posted 16 points on 7-of-11 from the floor, plus tallied four rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) tied her season high with 14 points behind three-of-four from beyond the arc off the bench, while junior Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Classmate Lauren Bennett (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) collected four points, three assists, two steals and one block in the victory and fellow junior Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) registered six points, six rebounds, three steals and one block on Wednesday.

Cal U jumped out to a 16-3 lead at the 4:43-mark in the first quarter behind eight points from both Loyd and Terrell. During the run, the Fighting Scots made just one-of-five from the floor and committed five turnovers. Edinboro then mounted an 8-2 run in just over one minute before Cal U held a 20-11 lead at the end of the quarter. The Fighting Scots scored the initial basket of the second quarter before the Vulcans countered with 12-unaswered points, including eight by Herrington, to hold a 32-13 lead with 6:25 left before halftime. Harrison converted a rare four-point play at the 5:33-mark before Edinboro closed the second quarter on a 13-3 rally to trim the deficit to 41-29 at the break.

The Vulcans limited the Fighting Scots to only one field goal in the third quarter (41 seconds left; 1-of-13) on Wednesday. Both teams were scoreless for the opening three minutes of the quarter before Cal U engineered a 14-3 run behind eight points from Allen to take a 55-32 lead at the 2:59-mark. The Vulcans scored the final points of the quarter which started a 15-5 run to stretch the lead to 29 points, 70-41, on a jumper by Allen with 3:31 left to play. Edinboro tallied seven of the last nine points in the contest on Wednesday.

Cal U finished the game shooting 51.0 percent (26-of-51) from the floor, including 7-of-14 (50.0 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, Edinboro was held to a .283 field-goal percentage (15-of-53) and converted 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the charity stripe. The Vulcans posted a 33-32 rebounding advantage and scored 28 points inside the paint, plus forced 22 turnovers.
