Vulcans roll past Alderson Broaddus, 10-1

Brosky registers most strikeouts since 2005; Brogan belts PSAC-leading sixth homer of the spring

WILSON, N.C. (March 11) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team posted a pair of four-run innings and senior starting pitcher Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville) set a career high with 13 strikeouts in a 10-1 win over Alderson Broaddus at Fleming Stadium on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 9-3 overall after out-scoring their three opponents in North Carolina by a 25-5 margin. Meanwhile, the Battlers remain winless this season with a 0-9 mark.

Brosky earned the win on Friday to improve 3-1 this season. He yielded one run (unearned) on two hits and three walks over 6.0 innings against the Battlers. Brosky became the first Cal U pitcher to record 13 strikeouts in a game since Ian Heisel accomplished the feat in 8.0 innings at Lock Haven on April 15, 2005. The Brownsville product forced Alderson Broaddus to strand seven runners on base, including four in scoring position.

Cal U took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first after collecting four singles and one walk. Senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) posted an RBI single before later scoring on a two-run single by senior catcher Chris Brady (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty) with two outs. Following a wild pitcher, senior shortstop Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) added an RBI single.

The Vulcans left a runner in scoring position in both the third and fourth before the Battlers cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the fifth on a two-out error. Cal U responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by senior right fielder Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), his sixth of the year. Brogan is now tied for eighth all-time in school history with 21 homers.

Sophomore transfer Brett Bobin (Wampum, Pa./Mohawk) retired Alderson Broaddus in order in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts while making his season debut. Cal U extended the lead to 10-1 in the eighth after scoring three unearned runs in the inning. Senior second baseman Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) posted an RBI single before Venezia scored on a sacrifice fly. Freshman center fielder Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny) followed with a two-out RBI single before McCaskey scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Freshman Jake Woolf (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) closed the game with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief and posted three strikeouts.

Brogan finished 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, three RBI, two runs scored and one walk from the cleanup spot. Brady went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Crawford posted a pair of hits for his fourth multi-hit game of the spring.

Battler starter Julian Russell (0-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs (all earned) on five hits and four walks in 4.1 innings.

Cal U closes its trip to North Carolina on Sunday, March 13, when a single nine-inning contest against Alderson Broaddus at 11 a.m.

Note, the Vulcans were previously set to play a pair of games tomorrow, Saturday, March 12, however, anticipated rain and wind in the area forced schedule changes.
