Cal U rolls Mercyhurst on Senior Day, 75-54

Terrell posts fourth 30-point game of the season; Vulcans score 27 points off turnovers

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 23) - Behind a 30-point performance by junior Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic), the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team rolled to a 75-54 victory over Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Senior Day at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 21-4 this season with a 16-4 mark in conference action. Cal U enters the the final game of the regular season in first place in the divisional standings with tournament seeding still to be determined. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 9-18 overall with a 7-14 record in league play.

Terrell recorded her fourth 30-point game of the season, as she finished with 33 points on 12-of-27 shooting from the floor and seven-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also totaled nine rebounds (five offensive) and one block while playing 34 minutes on Wednesday.

Junior Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) registered 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals in 26 minutes of action. Classmate Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) collected 11 points on three-of-five from three-point territory and three steals, while fellow junior Lauren Bennett (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) tallied five rebounds and two steals in the victory.

The teams traded the opening eight points of the contest before the Vulcans mounted a 7-2 run to lead 11-6 with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter. Cal U ended the quarter on a 12-2 run, led by Loyd, to extend its lead to 23-8. The teams traded the initial 14 points of the second quarter before the Vulcans put together a 7-2 stint to lead 37-17 with 3:19 remaining before halftime. After a Mercyhurst jumper, Terrell and Loyd mounted an 8-4 run as Cal U led by a 45-23 margin at the break.

The Vulcans opened the second half on a 7-3 run with all seven points by Terrell. The Lakers responded by scoring seven-consecutive points to trim the deficit to 52-33 midway through the third quarter. After a layup by Terrell, Cal U scored 10 of the next 12 points, led by Harrison and Terrell, to extend its lead to 64-35. Mercyhurst rallied to end the quarter trailing by a 66-39 margin. The Lakers began the fourth quarter by scoring seven of the next 11 points before scoring eight-straight points to trim the deficit to 70-54 at the 2:08-mark.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the floor while converting 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) form three-point territory. In comparison, Mercyhurst shot at a 34.6 percent (18-of-52) clip and converted 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the foul line. Both teams collected 39 rebounds, while Cal U scored 27 points off turnovers in the victory.

Junior Jayde Boyd led the Lakers with 14 points and four rebounds, while redshirt freshman Brittini Martin tallied nine points and converted seven-of-nine from the charity stripe. Classmate Grace Centrulla recorded eight points, seven rebounds and one steal on Wednesday.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26, when it closes out the regular season by facing Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
