Vulcans open year with home sweep over ODU

Cal U registers two shutout victories; Four players post home runs on Opening Day

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 16) – The Vulcans opened the season by combining for four home runs and posting back-to-back shutouts, as they swept a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican in non-conference action at Wild Things Park on Wednesday afternoon, winning 1-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team starts the year with a 2-0 mark while holding the Panthers to seven combined hits in the sweep. Meanwhile, Ohio Dominican falls to 0-2 to start the year after being selected fourth in the preseason Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) poll.

In Game 1, senior Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville) tossed 6.0 scoreless innings (72 pitches) while making his first career Opening Day start. He scattered two hits and issued no walks while registering seven strikeouts. Last season, Brosky led the team with eight wins and 55 strikeouts while logging over 60 innings.

Senior second baseman Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led off the bottom of the first with his first career home run after totaling over 200 at-bats. Ohio Dominican threatened in the top of the seventh following a leadoff single and later drew a walk with one out. Sophomore transfer Troy Lincavage (Ambler, Pa./Legend (Colo.) then entered the game and retired the next two batters in order to collect the save.

In Game 2, the Vulcans belted a trio of two-run homers and collected 17 hits in the victory. Sophomore Jackson Miller (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) earned the victory after scattering four hits over 6.0 scoreless innings (78 pitches). He posted three strikeouts and two walks while making the fifth start of his career.

Cal U took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by senior shortstop Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) before stretching its lead in the third inning on a two-run longball by senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California), 4-0. In the fifth, senior designated hitter Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler) reached on an error before senior right fielder Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) belted a two-run homer to increase the lead to 6-0. Stewart collected an RBI double in the sixth before Louden Conte followed with RBI double over the centerfielder's head in the eighth to extend the lead, 8-0.

The trio of McCaskey, Louden Conte and Brogan combined for three home runs and seven RBI. McCaskey finished 4-of-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Stewart finished 4-of-5 with three doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Venezia went 3-of-5 with one double, while freshman first baseman Payton Conte (California, Pa./California) finished 2-of-4 with one RBI. Louden Conte went 2-of-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Cal U will close out the series against Ohio Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Wild Things Park with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
