Vulcans claim win over East Stroudsburg, 69-50

Fink posts third 20-point game of the season; California allows just two field goals in third quarter

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 19) – The California (PA) women's basketball team led wire-to-wire on Monday afternoon in a 69-50 win against East Stroudsburg at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-4 this season with a 2-2 mark in league play.  Cal has won the last five meetings against ESU dating back to the 2016-17 campaign. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 6-4 overall behind a 2-2 record in conference action.

Senior Rajah Fink (Dover, Pa./Dover) posted her third 20-point game of the season, scoring a game-high 24 points on 8-of-16 from the floor and seven-of-seven from the free-throw line. She also paced the team with nine rebounds (four offensive) and added three assists and three steals. Fink is averaging 16.8 points and 11.3 rebounds over the last eight games.

Junior Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) tallied 15 points behind three-of-seven from long range, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Sophomore Allycia Harris (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Elmer L. Meyers) added eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while junior Jordan Smith (Manassas, Va./Colgan) recorded eight points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. Senior Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) finished with 12 points, three assists and two steals on Monday.

The Vulcans started the game on an 8-3 run behind three-pointers by Loyd and Smith. Cal later scored nine-consecutive points to take a 17-6 lead on a jumper by Harris with 2:27 left in the first quarter. The Warriors made a pair of treys within in a span of a minute and later trailed 20-12 at the end of the quarter. East Stroudsburg cut the deficit to 26-20 at the 7:04-mark in the second quarter before Cal mounted an 11-0 run to stretch the lead to 37-20 on a three-point play by Harrington with 3:37 left before the break. Cal converted four free-throws in the final minutes of the second quarter to take a 41-24 lead at halftime.

Cal scored six-straight points midway through the third quarter to take a 47-28 lead and later tallied an 8-0 run to extend the advantage to 55-32 lead. The Vulcans limited the Warriors to just nine points in the third quarter after going just 2-of-12 from the floor. Cal posted a 7-1 run over 90 seconds in the fourth quarter and later extended its lead to as many as 27 points, 69-42, on a three-pointer by Fink with 2:14 remaining. The Warriors scored the final eight points of the contest to cut the deficit to 69-50.

The Vulcans finished the game with a .387 field-goal percentage (24-of-62) and a 40.0 clip (8-of-20) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Warriors made 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the floor and went 7-of-20 (35.0 percent) from long range. Both teams finished with 34 rebounds, while Cal forced 22 turnovers that were converted into 23 points.

Sophomore Jessica Polin led ESU with 11 points and added five rebounds in the loss. Graduate student Ryan Weise finished with 10 points and six rebounds while committing eight turnovers.

Cal is idle for over a week before continuing PSAC Crossover play on Dec. 30 when it travels to face Kutztown, which set a school record with 26 wins last year, at 1 p.m.
