NOTES
• Cal returns to action on Saturday with the 13th edition of the Coal Bowl against IUP. The Vulcans rolled to a 59-14 victory at Clarion last week. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks earned a 20-12 win over Slippery Rock behind a pair of first-half interceptions in the end zone.

• Junior JaQuae Jackson accounted for four touchdowns (one rushing), as the Vulcans also scored touchdowns on defense and special teams while posting a 59-14 win at Clarion. Jackson finished with 170 receiving yards and three touchdowns on seven catches, plus added a one-yard rushing score. Junior linebacker Matt Tobey tied for the team lead with eight tackles and registered a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown, while fellow linebacker Josh Miller scored on a blocked punt return. Senior quarterback Noah Mitchell finished with 267 passing yards and three scores.

• The Vulcans and Crimson Hawks initiated the Coal Bowl in 2009. The home team has won eight of the last nine meetings with the lone exception being last season when Cal earned a 38-34 win in the final seconds at Miller Stadium.

• A longtime assistant with the program, Paul Tortorella is in sixth season as head coach at IUP. He served as interim head coach in 2017 and has posted a 42-9 mark as head coach of the Crimson Hawks, highlighted by the 2017 PSAC Championship and a pair of appearances in the NCAA Playoffs. Tortorella previously spent over two decades as the defensive coordinator at IUP.

• IUP tied for first place in the preseason PSAC West poll after boasting a league-high 17 All-PSAC West selections in 2021. The Crimson Hawks rank among the top 10 in the country in total offense, averaging 470.5 yards per game. IUP features one of the nation's top playmakers in senior Duane Brown. He ranks second in the country with 138.5 receiving yards per game on 9.0 receptions per game, most in the nation. Brown is tied for third among active players in NCAA Division II with 26 career receiving touchdowns. Additionally, IUP leads the PSAC in rushing offense with 213.8 yards per game. Sophomore Dayjure Stewart ranks fourth in the league with 455 rushing yards while playing just three games. At quarterback, Pittsburg State transfer Mak Sexton paces the conference with a 70.9 completion percentage while averaging 256.8 passing yards per game. He has posted three passing touchdowns in three of the four games this year. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Drew DiNunzio-Biss leads the team with 33 tackles and senior linebacker Connor Kelly has made 25 stops with 4.0 TFL. Defensive lineman Gregory Moore II, a transfer from Stetson, paces the team with 4.5 TFL and fellow defensive lineman Tyrone Fowler, Jr. - the 2021 PSAC West Freshman of the Year - has recorded 4.0 TFL and 2.5 sacks. The Crimson Hawks lost both the All-PSAC West First-Team kicker and punter from 2021. Freshman Nick Andrasi is serving both roles this year and is averaging 35.5 yards per punt.

• This weekend marks the 13th anniversary of the Coal Bowl between rivals Cal and IUP with the home team winning eight of the last nine meetings. The Vulcans hold an 8-4 edge in the series while posting a 5-0 mark at Adamson Stadium in the Coal Bowl. The Crimson Hawks enter the Coal Bowl nationally-ranked for the sixth-consecutive time and the eighth time overall.

• Cal and the National Football Foundation will honor College Football Hall of Fame electee John Luckhardt prior to kickoff on Saturday. The all-time winningest coach in school history, he posted a 225-70-2 overall record in 27 seasons at head coach while at Washington & Jefferson and Cal. Luckhardt will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Dec. 6 at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. MORE INFO

• IUP features a familiar face on the coaching staff in first-year offensive coordinator Larry Wilson. He spent the last 17 seasons as the wide receivers coach/special teams coordinator for the Vulcans. Wilson mentored over a combined 45 All-PSAC West wide receivers and specialists during his time at Cal, including Garry Brown who was a consensus First-Team All-American and finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2016.

• Junior Davonte Williams has led the team in rushing in each of the last two weeks. He has posted 257 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 38 attempts in his first season as a running back with a combined 233 yards over the last two weeks. • Cal has posted a 16-10 record at home against nationally-ranked teams since the 2000 campaign, including a 5-3 mark against IUP during that span. This weekend marks the first game at Adamson Stadium against a top-25 team since 2018 when the Vulcans earned a 36-24 win over the then-No. 2 Crimson Hawks. Under head coach Gary Dunn, Cal holds a 5-1 record at home versus nationally-ranked opponents.

• The Vulcans enter the weekend ranked fourth in NCAA Division II in rushing defense, allowing only 55.4 yards per game. Last week, Cal held Clarion to just 56 rushing yards on 38 attempts after nearly averaging 200 yards per game. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks lead the PSAC in rushing offense at 213.8 yards per game. IUP totaled nearly 600 combined rushing yards in wins over Shippensburg and Mercyhurst.

• In his second year as a starter, junior JaQuae Jackson continues to rank among the top wide receivers in the country. He is tied for the lead in NCAA Division II with eight receiving touchdowns and ranks among the top 10 in the nation with 122.4 receiving yards and 8.4 receptions per game. Jackson is also tied for the PSAC lead with nine total touchdowns, which is fourth-most in the country.

• Junior linebacker Matt Tobey posted the first interception return for a touchdown of his career last week at Clarion. He also tied for the team lead with eight tackles and tallied 1.5 TFL against the Golden Eagles. In his second season as a starter, Tobey currently leads the team with 40 tackles and has already established career highs with 7.5 TFL and 3.0 sacks.

• Last weekend, Cal registered a pair of blocked punts in the victory at Clarion.
