EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 28) – The California (PA) volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (25-15, 20-25, 15-25, 19-25) at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Friday night.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 11-11 overall with a 5-8 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 18-7 this season behind an 8-5 record in league competition.
Senior
Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) paced the team with 11 kills on a .235 hitting percentage and added a team-high three service aces. Freshman
Elisa Rugiero (Vicenza, Italy/Farina Vicenza) recorded 10 kills while hitting at a .207 clip plus collected a pair of service aces, while senior
Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) registered nine kills on Friday. Sophomore
Rachel Simon (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) set a career high with 33 assists in the contest.

Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) led the team with 18 digs followed by Rugiero and sophomore
Allie Droneberger (North Beach, Md./Northern) each with nine digs. Rugiero and Droneberger also controlled the net on Friday with four blocks and junior
Alayja Floyd (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tallied three blocks.
Edinboro jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the first set, leading to a Cal timeout. After the timeout, the Vulcans executed a 5-2 run and claimed an 8-7 lead and later extended the lead to 13-11. The momentum kept rolling for Cal as it scored four of the next five points following the timeout and held a 17-12 advantage. The Vulcans then conducted an 8-3 run to finish the set with a 25-15 victory.
The teams went back-and-forth in the beginning of the second set, as it featured four ties in the initial 10 points. Cal orchestrated an 9-6 run and held a 14-11 lead followed by a timeout by the Fighting Scots. Edinboro rolled to six-unanswered points coming out of the timeout and led by a 17-14 margin. The Fighting Scots extended their lead to 22-15 by scoring five of the next six points. Cal countered with three-straight points and trimmed the deficit to 22-18, however, Edinboro won the second set by a 25-20 margin after scoring three of the next five points.
The Fighting Scots held momentum in the third set with an early 10-5 lead. Edinboro maintained a five-point advantage at 13-8 before extending its lead to a 16-10 margin. The Vulcans cut its deficit to 17-13 after a service ace from Droneberger, however, the Fighting Scots answered with three-consecutive points. The teams traded the next four points until Edinboro won the set by a 25-15 count following three-unanswered points.
In the fourth set, neither team pulled ahead as the set was tied at 7-7 until the Fight Scots scored four-straight points to obtain an 11-7 lead. Cal and Edinboro traded the next four points followed by the Fighting Scots scoring six of the next eight points to take a 19-11 lead. The Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 21-19 after executing an 8-2 run, however, Edinboro rattled off four-consecutive points to take the fourth set, 25-19.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29, as they travel to Erie, Pennsylvania, to face Mercyhurst in divisional action at 4 p.m.
