California falls to Clarion at home, 1-0

Golden Eagles score game-winner in 74th minute; Ouimet collects five saves in contest

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 12) – The California (PA) women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest against Clarion on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 4-6-2 overall behind a 4-5-2 mark in conference play. Cal and Clarion have split the last six meetings in series with the road team winning each time this year. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-10-1 this season with a 2-9-1 record in divisional action.

Clarion seized possession early with a corner kick in the opening minute of play with the ball being cleared without a shot attempt. In the 18th minute, the Vulcans threatened with a shot attempt and corner kick within a 30-second span. The Golden Eagles looked to strike at the 23:50-mark before a shot attempt was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick). In the final 10-plus minutes of the first half, senior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) attempted to give Cal a lead with three shot attempts with two resulting in a block and one sailing high of the net.

The Golden Eagles placed a shot on goal in the early portion of the second half with Ouimet making the save. Cal tallied a pair of shot attempts in just over five minutes with redshirt freshman Kaylee Elwood (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) shooting on net at the 55:05-mark. Ouimet registered a pair of saves before freshman Courtney Lindgren (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) placed a shot on target in the 72nd minute. Clarion responded at the 73:49-mark when Jaci Bowser beat the goalie after receiving a cross in front of the net. The Vulcans threatened to tie the score in the 85th minute with a shot attempt on goal by sophomore Megan Elzinga (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern).

Ouimet finished with five saves while playing all 90 minutes on Wednesday. She has made at least five saves in seven games this season.

Cal and Clarion both collected eight shot attempts in the contest, while the Vulcans held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal returns to action with back-to-back road games, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 15, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
