Vulcans downed at Shippensburg, 2-1

Teams combine for 28 shot attempts, 23 fouls; Raiders score game-winner on 'own goal'

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Vulcans suffered a 2-1 defeat with the decisive goal being an 'own goal' in the second half at Shippensburg in non-conference play on Wednesday night.

With the loss, the California (PA) men's soccer team falls to 3-7-1 overall this fall. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 4-5-2 under 15th-year head coach Jeremy Spering.

The Vulcans recorded a pair of corner kicks in the sixth minute with no shot attempt as a result. Shippensburg gained a 1-0 lead at the 7:22-mark when Harry Kershaw scored off a feed from Ethan Paulukow. Less than two minutes later, junior Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) tied the score at 1-1 off an assist from senior Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) for his second goal of the season. The Vulcans kept the pressure on with senior Chance Pursifull (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View), however, the Raiders answered as they tallied the next four attempts in addition to a corner kick. For the remainder of the first half, each team notched three shot attempts as neither could break the tie.

Shippensburg attacked early in the second half, as it posted three corner kicks and a shot within a three-minute span. At the 57:17-mark, the Raiders took a 2-1 lead following an 'own goal' scored by Cal. Freshman Riley Zimmerman (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) recorded a shot attempt at the 64:05-mark that sailed high right of the net. In the 70th minute, sophomore Corey McKoy (Reading, Pa./Antietam) laced a on goal attempt which was saved. Cal tallied four attempts in a five-minute span from the 83rd minute to the 88th minute, however, the Vulcans were unable to tie the score.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) collected five saves in 90 minutes on Wednesday.
