CALIFORNIA (Jan. 26) – The Vulcans extended their winning streak to five games with a 79-55 victory over Seton Hill on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 13-4 this season behind an 8-3 record in league action. The Vulcans now sit third in the PSAC this season in scoring offense at 85.1 points per game. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 2-16 overall with a 2-11 mark in conference play.
Senior
Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) scored a game-high 18 points behind seven-of-nine from the free-throw line. He also added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in the victory. Pegram is averaging 19.0 points during the team's five-game winning streak with a combined 22 assists and 11 steals.
Junior
Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) posted 14 points on six-of-nine shooting and six rebounds, while sophomore
Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) scored 15 points on 7-of-12 from the field and added three rebounds, two assists and two blocks on Wednesday. Senior
Preston Boswell (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) registered 14 points, three rebounds and four assists, while freshman
Bryson Lucas (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd) finished with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench. Fellow freshman
Keith Palek III (Woodbine, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) paced the team with 12 rebounds, marking his sixth game with double-digit rebounds this season.
The Griffins scored the opening basket of the game before the Vulcans scored eight-straight points to take an 8-2 lead at the 16:22-mark. Cal U later mounted a 21-4 run over four-plus minutes to take a 29-10 lead on a fastbreak layup by Lucas with 9:04 left in the first half. During the run, Pegram paced the team with eight points as the Vulcans shot six-of-eight from the floor and eight-of-nine from the free-throw line. Cal U eventually led by as many as 22 points, 37-15, in the first half with 3:40 left before the break. The Vulcans held a 40-23 lead at halftime with Pegram leading all players with 13 points.
Early in the second half, Cal U posted an 8-3 run to take a 56-34 lead on a dunk by Alston at the 13:36-mark. The Vulcans later scored seven-unanswered points midway through the half to stretch the lead to 63-37 with 9:07 left to play. Cal U expanded its lead to as many as 30 points, 77-47, on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman
Dylin Borden (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) with 3:27 remaining.
The Vulcans shot at a 45.9 clip (28-of-61) despite going just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from long range. In comparison, the Griffins were held to a .300 field-goal percentage (21-of-70) while going 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) from beyond the arc. Cal U held a 47-41 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points in the paint. The Vulcans also scored 22 fastbreak points in the victory.
Junior Drew Green led the Griffins with 13 points and added five rebounds in the losing effort. Sophomore Sean Dillon finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Ryan Meis recorded a team-high 10 rebounds and scored seven points.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 29, when it travels to play at Slippery Rock with tip-off at 3 p.m. Note, no spectators are allowed at the contest.
