Vulcans record draw against Lock Haven, 1-1

Nebinski ties score in 75th minute; Zabilowicz collects six saves in home-opener

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 4) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw versus Lock Haven in non-conference play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday evening.

With the tie, the Vulcans move to 0-1-1 on the season while hosting their home opener on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles begin their campaign with a 0-0-1 record after being picked fourth in the preseason PSAC East poll.

In the first half, Lock Haven struck first as junior forward Tom Pombor took a short cross from just outside the box from midfielder Zane Puhala at the 5:14-mark. Pombor was able to beat the goalie and put the ball in the left side of the net to give the Bald Eagles a 1-0 lead. After a corner kick by the Vulcans and a save from junior Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East), junior midfielder Diego Rodriguez (Bristol, Pa./Harry S. Truman) saw a free kick sail right over the net to keep the score at 1-0.

In the second half, Lock Haven was able to record two early shots and a pair of corner kicks before freshman midfielder Chris Garcia (Winchester, Va./James Wood) had his header saved by Jason Keller. After three corner kicks and two shots, the Vulcans were able to get on the board at the 75th minute. Junior Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) took a shot from about 20 yards out and was able to place the ball in the bottom right corner of the net. Junior forward Michael McAnalley (East McKeesport, Pa./East Allegheny) was awarded the assist on the goal. Both teams combined for seven more shots down the stretch of the half before the game was forced into overtime.

Cal U tallied just one shot in the first overtime period, but was unable to find the back of the net. In the second overtime, both teams had limited chances and the contest ultimately ended in a draw.

Zabilowicz recorded six saves on 18 shots faced while playing all 110 minutes of action. The Bald Eagles out-shot the Vulcans by an 18-10 margin, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Vulcans return to action Thursday, Sept. 9, when they host Cedarville at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility with play starting at 3:00 p.m.
