• Cal U begins PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon when its travels to face Edinboro. Last week, the Vulcans recorded a second-straight shutout with a 30-0 victory over Millersville. Meanwhile, Edinboro suffered a 41-37 loss at West Chester despite erasing an 18-point deficit.
• The Vulcans posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2012 season with a 30-0 victory over Millersville last week. Junior quarterback
Noah Mitchell finished with 320 passing yards on 27-of-29 attempts and accounted for a pair of touchdowns (one rushing). Sophomore wide receiver
JaQuae Jackson led the team with nine receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown. Linebackers
Noah Dillow and
Gabe Miller each paced the defense with six tackles and combined for 3.0 TFL. The Vulcans allowed just four first downs and 81 total yards of offense in the victory.
• The Vulcans have won the last 15 meetings in the series with the Fighting Scots. Cal U has also won seven-consecutive meetings in the series at Sox Harrison Stadium with its last loss at Edinboro coming in 2004.
• A former assistant at all three NCAA levels,
Jake Nulph is in his second year as head coach at Edinboro. He served as defensive backs and special teams coordinator at IUP in 2019 following one-year stint at Duquesne. Nulph was the defensive and special teams coordinator at Westminster from 2014-17 with the Titans recording three-straight winning seasons for the first time in nearly two decades.
• Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the preseason PSAC West poll while featuring its fourth head coach in the last six seasons. The Fighting Scots feature a familiar name at running back in
Anfreenee Williams, who previously played at Edinboro in 2014. As a freshman, he earned All-PSAC West Second-Team status after finishing with 678 rushing yards and four touchdowns, plus made 20 receptions. Williams, who recorded three 100-yard games in 2014, posted 69 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries last week at West Chester. Freshman
Dontae Sanders also scored three rushing touchdowns in the contest and finished with 49 yards on 13 attempts. Edinboro features a first-year starter at quarterback in FIU transfer
Tannor Watson. A native of Florida, Watson was with the Panthers from 2018-19 before making his college debut this season. He finished with 257 passing yards last week on 23-of-38 attempts with two interceptions. Defensively, Edinboro is led by the tandem of junior linebacker
Saige Ley and sophomore
Anthony Mendicino with each posting 13 tackles through two games. Ley tallied 49 tackles (29 solo) with 5.5 TFL in 2019. The Fighting Scots feature a 2019 All-PSAC West Second-Team specialist in kicker
Vicente Arriagada. As a redshirt freshman, he broke the single-season school record with 16 field-goals made, including two of 40-plus yards. He converted the game-winning field goal as time expired against Gannon in 2019.
• The Vulcans recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2012 season last week against Millersville. Cal U ranks second in NCAA Division II this season in scoring defense at 4.7 points per game. Throughout
all NCAA classifications, the Vulcans rank behind only North Dakota State of FCS in scoring defense among teams that have played multiple games this fall.
• Following a breakout performance in Week 2, sophomore
JaQuae Jackson led the team with 99 receiving yards on nine catches and one touchdown against Millersville. He leads the team and ranks fourth in the PSAC with 335 receiving yards this season, plus sits second in the league with 6.7 receptions per game. Jackson has made five catches of at least 20 yards, including three touchdowns of over 40 yards.
• Sophomore linebacker
Noah Dillow helped anchor the stout defensive effort versus Millersville and was selected the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time in his career. He tied for the team lead with six tackles and registered 2.0 TFL and 1.0 sack in the victory. Dillow paces the team and ranks among the league leaders this season with 23 tackles (nine solo).
• The Vulcans rank behind only Shepherd in the PSAC in both passing efficiency and third-down conversion percentage. Through three games, Cal U sits third in the nation by converting a staggering 61.4 percent (27-of-44) on third downs. The Vulcans also boast a 157.88 passing efficiency while averaging 37.3 points per game.
• Last week, junior quarterback
Noah Mitchell completed 21-straight passes before finishing the game with a 93.1 completion percentage (27-of-29). He also surpassed the 300-yard mark for the third-straight game, totaling 320 passing yards and accounting for two touchdowns (one rushing). Mitchell sits second in the PSAC and ninth in the country with 937 passing yards this season.
• Senior
Sam Rothstein started at left guard last week against Millersville after appearing in the initial two games of the year as a reserve. He is a graduate transfer from Muhlenberg (Pa.) and started all 27 games at left guard over the 2018-19 seasons for the Mules. As a junior, Rothstein helped Muhlenberg advance to the national semifinals of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
• Freshman
Anthony Beitko tallied 12 points on three field goals and three PAT attempts in the victory against Millersville. He became the first specialist since the 2018 season to be chosen the PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Beitko leads the PSAC and ranks No. 15 in the country this season with 33 points while averaging 2.33 field goals per game, which is third-most in NCAA Division II.
• Cal U allowed just 81 yards of total offense and four first downs in last week's shutout against Millersville. The last time the Vulcans held an opponent to under 100 yards of total offense was in Week 3 of the 2016 season, also versus the Marauders. Cal U is one of only four schools in the country to rank among the top 15 in scoring defense, total defense and rushing defense.
• The Vulcans have utilized a trio of running backs this season with each totaling over a dozen carries. Last week, senior
Kyle Brunson and redshirt freshman
Eric McKan III combined for 101 rushing yards on 31 attempts with McKan recording his second touchdown of the year. Brunson leads the team with 154 rushing yards and three scores, while sophomore
Richie Sykes boasts the longest run this fall at 30 yards.
• Cal U is playing back-to-back games in the series with Edinboro at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Vulcans have won their last seven road games in the series, including a 24-7 victory during the 2019 campaign. Cal U claimed a 35-31 victory in the first-ever night game at Sox Harrison Stadium in 2008 following a late touchdown.
• Junior defensive back
Jermal Martin, Jr. entered the year with eight career interceptions after leading the team with four interceptions during the 2019 campaign. He also recorded zero career sacks through 22 games, however, he has notched 1.0 sack in each of the past two weeks. Martin is tied for the team lead with 2.0 sacks this season and has collected nine tackles and two pass break-ups while serving as a team captain.
• Junior wide receiver
Derek Lockhart made his season debut last weekend against Millersville. He posted 63 yards on three receptions, including a long of 39 yards late in the first half to setup a field goal, while making his second career start. Lockhart has been a special teams standout in career, totaling 14 stops on special teams and 249 kickoff return yards in 2019.
