CALIFORNIA (May 1) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team closed the regular season with a doubleheader split against Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play while hosting Senior Day at Lilley Field on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 10-1 loss in Game 1 before earning a 12-4 run-rule victory in Game 2.
With the split, the Vulcans finish the regular season with a 19-9 record this season – both overall and in divisional action. Cal U, which already had secured the third seed in the league tournament, will play a best-of-three series at Gannon in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament on May 5-6. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 26-10 overall and finish with a 23-7 mark in league to win the PSAC West for first time since joining the PSAC in 2014.
In Game 2, senior shortstop
Alexa Pastor (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) paced five players with multi-hit games by going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Freshman center fielder
Alyssa Young (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk and senior first baseman
Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) collected two hits and two RBI. Freshman left fielder
Jordan Pinneri (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, plus senior catcher
Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) tallied two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
The Griffins scored a pair of runs in the top of the first with two outs before the Vulcans tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning. Young collected an RBI single before freshman right fielder
Charity Henderson (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored on a wild pitch. In the second, Pastor reached on an RBI infield single before
Brooke Wilson registered an RBI double down the left-field line.
Henderson tallied a two-out RBI single in the fourth before Seton Hill trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the fifth after the inning started with back-to-back triples. The Griffins drew a one-out walk in the top of the sixth before
Brooke Wilson shifted to the circle and recorded a strikeout and ground-out to end the inning.
Cal U forced the run-rule victory by scoring seven runs on five hits and four errors in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second, Young collected an RBI single before
Paige Wilson followed with a two-run single. Following an error, freshman second baseman
Salena Jaquay (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Pinneri tallied back-to-back RBI doubles before Seton Hill made its second pitching change of the inning. Freshman third baseman
Britney Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) closed the contest with a two-out RBI single through the middle.
Junior
Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) earned the victory to improve to 6-1 this season. She allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits and four walks in 5.1 innings (82 pitches).
Brooke Wilson recorded the save with 0.2 inning of relief after making her collegiate pitching debut in Game 1 on Saturday.
In Game 1, the Vulcans were limited to four hits and faced a 5-1 deficit before allowing five runs in the seventh. Sophomore
Ellie Lobdell (Warren, Pa./Warren) was saddled with the loss after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and one walk in 5.1 innings (87 pitches).
Seton Hill took a 1-0 lead in the second before scoring three runs on three hits and one error in the fourth, 4-0. The Vulcans loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth before an infield fly and consecutive strikeouts ended the inning. The Griffins looked to extend the lead in the fifth before Pinneri threw out a runner at the plate on a single through the left side.
In the sixth, Seton Hill scored one run in the top of the inning before Cal U avoided the shutout when Young lined a two-out RBI double to left field. The Griffins opened the seventh with a triple and single before
Brooke Wilson entered the circle for the first time in her career. Seton Hill loaded the bases on back-to-back bunts before catcher Mackenzie Zang belted a grand slam.
Brooke Wilson then retired the next three batters in order.
Britney Wilson collected three of the team's four hits, finishing 3-for-3 with one run scored.
The Vulcans open play in the PSAC Tournament next week when they travel to face Gannon in a best-of-three series in Erie, Pennsylvania. Cal U won three of four games against Gannon during the regular season. Additional information will be posted when made available.
