INDIANA, Pa. (April 3) – The Vulcans scored over 20 runs in a road doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to a complete series sweep against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 11-1 and 10-4.
With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 14-6 this season behind a 5-3 record in league play. The Vulcans scored a combined 46 runs and totaled six homers in the four-game weekend series against the Crimson Hawks. Meanwhile, IUP drops to 1-15 overall with a 0-8 mark in divisional action.
In Game 1, junior
Zach Rohaley (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned the complete-game victory and matched his career high with nine strikeouts. He allowed one run (earned) on five hits and three walks while improving to 1-2 this year.
The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the top on first on a sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI double by sophomore designated hitter
David Lee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). Cal U then scored four runs in the second on three hits and three walks. Junior catcher
Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler) collected an RBI double before junior third baseman
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) later delivered a two-run double with two outs. The Vulcans then drew back-to-back walks before McCaskey scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Cal U extended the lead to 10-0 in the third following a two-run double by freshman second baseman
Jax Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) and an RBI single by junior right fielder
Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart). The Crimson Hawks scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth before the Vulcans added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo homer by McCaskey, his fourth of the year.
Brogan finished 3-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and two walks, while McCaskey went 2-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Stewart collected three singles, one RBI and two runs scored and junior shortstop
Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) posted two hits and two runs scored.
In Game 2, the Vulcans scored 10 runs on only five hits after capitalizing on five errors and five walks. Freshman
Jackson Miller (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) recorded the victory while making his first collegiate start. He yielded two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk in 4.0 innings. Junior
Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) earned his fourth career save on Saturday. He allowed two runs (earned) on four hits while totaling five strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
Cal U took a 4-0 lead in the top of third after benefiting from a pair of errors in the inning. The Crimson Hawks cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth behind a pair of two-out RBI hits. In the fifth, Brogan posted a two-out RBI double before an error led to two additional runs, 7-2.
Stewart tallied an RBI single in the sixth before scoring on a two-run homer by
Jax Miller, his second of the year. IUP belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh before Gumto retired the next three hitters in order to seal the victory.
Venezia reached base three times (two walks, hit by pitch) and scored two runs from the leadoff spot.
Jax Miller recorded three RBI, while McCaskey and Stewart both scored twice in the victory.
Cal U returns to action on Friday, April 9, when it travels to face Mercyhurst, which won the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship in 2018 and 2019, for a doubleheader in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
