EDINBORO, Pa. (April 28) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team played through a pair of lightning delays on Wednesday afternoon to earn a 12-5 victory at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play before Game 2 was postponed due to weather.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 17-6 this season with every game in league action. Cal U remains in contention for the two remaining berths in the PSAC Tournament from the PSAC West with nine games left in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 12-15 overall, and in divisional play.
Freshman left fielder
Jordan Pinneri (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) recorded season highs of three hits and four RBI, as she finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman third baseman
Britney Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while freshman designated player
Shayna Postler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added two hits and two runs. Senior catcher
Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) finished 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run, plus senior first baseman
Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) tallied two singles and one RBI.
Cal U scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third before Edinboro countered with a three-run homer by designated player Jolene Teller in the bottom of the inning, 3-2.
Pinneri delivered a two-run single in the fourth and scored on an error following the second lightning delay of the game to give the Vulcans a 5-3 lead. In the fifth,
Britney Wilson lined a two-run double to right center and Pinneri later posted a two-run double to left center before scoring on a sacrifice fly, 10-3.
Cal U would stretch the lead to 12-4 in the top of the seventh with RBI singles by
Brooke Wilson and
Paige Wilson.
Sophomore
Ellie Lobdell (Warren, Pa./Warren) earned the complete-game victory to improve to 8-2 this season. She allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in the contest.
The Vulcans look to resume play against the Fighting Scots tomorrow, Thursday, April 29, with a rare tripleheader at Lilley Field, starting at 2:30 p.m.
Note: Seton Hill (21-5) and Gannon (21-9) have already secured berths in the PSAC Tournament. All mandated divisional games in the regular season are to be completed on Sunday, May 2.
