Softball registers two comebacks in sweep

Young tallies five hits, four RBI and three runs; Cal U scores a combined seven runs in 7th innings

CLARION, Pa. (March 23) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team mounted a pair of seventh-inning comebacks on Tuesday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, posting an 11-10 win in Game 1 and a 9-7 victory in Game 2.

With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 9-3 this season after sweeping the four-game series against the Golden Eagles. Meanwhile, Clarion falls to 3-9 overall with a 1-9 mark in divisional action.

In Game 1, the Golden Eagles held a 9-6 lead before senior catcher Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) delivered a two-run double with two outs in the top of the sixth. Cal U then claimed the lead in the seventh on a two-run single by freshman center fielder Alyssa Young (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) before freshman third baseman Shayna Postler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored on a sacrifice fly, 11-9. In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Eagles scored on a fielder's choice to trim the deficit to 11-10 before leaving the game-tying run on first base.

Senior first baseman Paige Wilson (Warren, Pa./Warren) went 3-for-3 with a solo homer, two RBI and one walk. Young finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Brooke Wilson collected a pair of doubles and three RBI. Senior shortstop Alexa Pastor (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) registered two RBI and two runs scored in the victory.

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Paige Wilson before adding a pair of unearned runs in the second. Pastor and Brooke Wilson tallied back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth to stretch to 5-1 before the Golden Eagles scored six runs in the bottom of the inning. Paige Wilson belted a solo homer in the fifth to trim the deficit to 7-6 before Clarion responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half.

Junior Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) earned the victory after allowing one run (earned) on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Clarion senior Rebecca Kelley suffered the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on two hits in 1.0 inning of relief.

In Game 2, Clarion held a 7-5 lead entering the top of the seventh inning. The Vulcans loaded the bases on a pair of singles and one walk before Postler cleared the bases with a three-run single. Later in the inning, Postler scored on a two-out RBI single by freshman designated player Britney Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny), 9-7.

Postler finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run scored and one walk. Freshman Charity Henderson (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Britney Wilson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Young added two hits, two RBI and one run scored in the victory.

The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added to the lead with three unearned runs in the third. Cal U answered with four runs on four hits and two walks in the top of the fourth. Young posted an RBI single before Britney Wilson later registered a two-run double and eventually scored on a wild pitch, 6-4. Clarion responded with one run in the bottom of the inning before Henderson scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Sophomore Ellie Lobdell (Warren, Pa./Warren) claimed the victory after working 2.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with five strikeouts. Clarion reliever Megan Anderson was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings of relief.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, March 26, with a road doubleheader against Slippery Rock, starting at 2:30 p.m.
