Cal U records shutout against Salem, 5-0

Vulcans limit the Tigers to only two hits; Cal U extends win streak to six games

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 23) – The Vulcans used four pitchers to record a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win against Salem in non-conference play at Wild Things Park on Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 9-3 this season while extending its winning streak to six games. Meanwhile, the Tigers fall to 3-14 overall after losing all three meetings against the Vulcans this spring.

Sophomore Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) earned his first career victory while making the start. He held Salem without a hit and issued six walks while posting three strikeouts over 4.2 innings (82 pitches).

Freshman Jackson Miller (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) allowed one hit in 2.1 innings of relief, while senior Richie Serignese (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and junior Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) both logged 1.0 inning in the win. On Tuesday, Serignese became the sixth pitcher in program history to make 50 career appearances (two starts).

In the bottom of the first, junior shortstop Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) reached on a fielding error to start the inning and later scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes). Senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) then followed with an RBI single down the left-field line.

Foster forced the Tigers to strand runners on the corners in the second before the Vulcans added to the lead in the third. Junior right fielder Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a ground-rule double by McCaskey. Brogan then scored on a ground-out before McCaskey scored on a two-out fielding error, 4-0.

Cal U added to the lead with a two-out RBI single by McCaskey in the bottom of the fourth. Salem again threatened with two runners on base and no outs in the fifth before Conte started a double play. Following a hit by pitch, Miller entered the game and retired the initial five batters he faced.

McCaskey, who made his first career start at first base, finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman second baseman Jax Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) scored a pair of runs in the victory.

The Vulcans return to action when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Friday, March 26, with a home doubleheader against Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
