Women's Basketball rolls at ESU, 69-29

Vulcans feature four players in double-figures; Cal U allows fewest points since 2010-11 season

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 4) – The Vulcans allowed less than 30 points for the first time in over a decade on Saturday evening while rolling to a 69-29 victory at East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 5-1 overall behind a 1-1 mark in conference action. The Vulcans yielded their fewest point total since surrendering 28 points to Molloy (N.Y.) on Nov. 28, 2010. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 0-5 on the season with a 0-3 record in league play.

Junior transfer Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) paced four players in double-digits and recorded her third double-double of the season while playing just three quarters. She totaled 21 points and tied her season high with 11 rebounds (four offensive). Terrell finished the game shooting 8-of-13 from the floor, including three-of-five from behind the arc, and added three blocks in 24 minutes.

Sophomore Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) scored a season-high 14 points and added a team-high five steals in 31 minutes off the bench, while classmate Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals on Saturday. Junior transfer Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) registered 10 points, four assists and two steals in the victory.

Cal U opened the game by scoring the initial eight points of the contest, led by five points from Terrell. After a free-throw by the Warriors, the Vulcans forced seven turnovers and went on a 10-0 run to lead 18-1 at the end of the first quarter. East Stroudsburg opened the second quarter with six-straight points to cut the deficit to 18-7 with 6:50 left before the break. After a three-pointer by Terrell, Cal U extended its lead to 32-8 by using an 11-1 run capped by a jumper from Loyd with three minutes remaining in the half. The Warriors mounted a 5-0 run in the final minutes of the half, as the Vulcans led 32-13 at intermission.

Cal U started the third quarter shooting five-of-nine from the floor and caused four turnovers as it went on an 11-0 run to expand the lead to 43-13 with 5:30 remaining. After a three-pointer from junior Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough), the Vulcans mounted a 7-3 run to lead 54-16 after a jumper from Hudson. The Warriors scored three of the next five points to trail 56-19 at the end of the third quarter. After going scoreless for almost three minutes, Cal U tallied nine of the next 12 points to hold a 65-22 advantage on a jumper from Herrington with 4:27 remaining in the game. East Stroudsburg ended the game on a 7-4 run before the Vulcans captured the victory.

Cal U finished the game shooting 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the floor and converted 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the charity stripe. In comparison, East Stroudsburg made only 20.8 percent (10-of-48) from the field and went 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the free-throw line. The Vulcans held a 45-43 rebound advantage and recorded 16 steals in the win.

East Stroudsburg freshman Izzy Vogel was the loan player in double-figures, as she finished with 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting and added five rebounds. Freshman Katie Geisler finished with a team-high 11 rebounds in 28 minutes of action.

The Vulcans are idle for a week before traveling to Maryland to face Bowie State in non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m.
