BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 3) – The tandem of senior
Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) and junior
Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) combined for nearly 50 points on Friday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team claimed an 88-75 victory at Bloomsburg to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 5-1 overall while averaging over 90 points per game this year. Cal U has won five of the last six meetings against Bloomsburg dating back to the 2012-13 campaign. Meanwhile, the Huskies drop to 1-4 this season after being tabbed eighth in the preseason PSAC East poll.
Pegram scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. He also collected five rebounds, two assists and three steals on Friday. Collins returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Nov. 13 and scored a season-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He posted six rebounds and two blocks in the victory.
Sophomore
Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) recorded his fourth-consecutive double-double on Friday. He scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and collected 15 rebounds (five offensive) while playing 32 minutes. Alston also added four assists, three blocks and four steals in the win over the Huskies.
Senior
Preston Boswell (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) finished with 10 points and six rebounds, while freshman
Keith Palek III (Woodbine, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) tallied eight rebounds (six offensive) on Friday. Fellow freshman
Bryson Lucas (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd) added seven points, three rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
The teams traded points in the opening four minutes before Cal U scored eight-consecutive points to take a 17-9 lead on a layup by Boswell at the 13:16-mark. The Huskies responded with a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 19-16 with 11:22 left in the first half. Cal U then mounted a 14-2 rally to stretch the lead to 33-18 on a traditional three-point play by Alston with 5:57 remaining before the break. During the run, the Vulcans held the Huskies to just 1-of-10 shooting from the floor. Bloomsburg cut the deficit to 36-26 before Collins scored four-straight points and Cal U later took a 45-31 lead at halftime.
The Huskies cut the deficit to 12 points, 51-39, in the opening minutes of the second half before the Vulcans posted a 9-2 run to stretch the advantage to 60-41 on a dunk by Colins with 14:24 left to play. Following a basket by Bloomsburg, Cal U mounted a 14-4 rally behind 10 points by Collins to extend its lead to 74-47 at the 10:25-mark. The Vulcans maintained a 20-point lead until the final three-plus minutes of the game when the Huskies finished play on an 11-2 run.
Cal U closed the game shooting 48.6 percent (35-of-72) from the field. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg shot at 44.1 clip (30-of-68) and converted 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from long range. The Vulcans held a 46-41 rebounding advantage and scored 56 points in the paint.
Junior Justin Anderson led Bloomsburg with 21 points on 9-of-19 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists. Senior Travis Elmore scored 17 points in the losing effort, while freshman Ash Kemble paced the team with 10 rebounds.
The Vulcans continue PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 4, when they travel to face East Stroudsburg at 7:30 p.m.
