Collins records fourth career double-double; Vulcans tally most blocks since January 2009

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 15) – Junior guard Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) set a career high in rebounds while collecting a double-double on Wednesday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team rolled to an 83-38 win over NAIA-member Carlow at the Convocation Center in non-conference action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-2 overall while playing their first home game in nearly a month. Meanwhile, the Celtics drop to 1-11 this season while playing their third game in four days.

Collins posted his fourth career double-double by tallying 22 points and 13 rebounds (five offensive). He went 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line on Wednesday. Collins also set a career high with five steals and added six assists while playing 28 minutes in the victory.

Sophomore Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and posted seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Senior Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) finished with 13 points and four assists against Carlow. He also moved into the top-20 on the school's all-time scoring list on Wednesday with 1,255 points.

Freshman Keith Palek III (Woodbine, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) tied for the team lead with a season-high 13 rebounds and scored seven points. Classmate Bryson Lucas (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd) added nine points, five rebounds, six blocks, two assists and two steals off the bench. He is the first player to record six blocks in a game since Chris Moore accomplished the feat on Feb. 11, 2010.

The Vulcans started the game with six-straight points before the Celtics scored their initial basket of the contest at the 15:15-mark. Cal U then mounted a 20-2 run over six-plus minutes while forcing Carlow to shoot only 1-of-10 from the floor and commit seven turnovers. Alston and Pegram each scored six points during the rally, which was capped by a dunk from Lucas to stretch the lead to 28-4 with 8:33 left before the break. The Vulcans closed the first half on a 15-2 run with a combined nine points from Collins and Alston to extend the lead to 45-13 at halftime.

Midway through the second half, Collins scored seven points during a 9-0 rally by Cal U to stretch the lead to 68-25 at the 8:54-mark. The Celtics then made a three-pointer before the Vulcans answered with 10-consecutive points with the run featuring a pair of three-pointers by redshirt freshman Dylin Borden (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian), as Cal U held a 78-28 lead with 3:46 remaining.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the floor after converting over 55 percent in the first half. In comparison, the Celtics managed just a .216 field-goal percentage (16-of-74) and shot only 5-of-26 (19.2 percent) from long range. Cal U held a 51-48 rebounding advantage and scored 42 points in the paint. The Vulcans also totaled 21 points off turnovers and recorded 12 blocks, their most in a game since January 2009.

Carlow sophomore Nehemiah Brazil scored a team-high eight points off the bench and also collected eight rebounds. Junior Hunter DeStefano led the team with nine rebounds (five offensive) and classmate David Clary posted eight rebounds off the bench.
