Vulcans cruise past Central State, 80-40

Cal U scores 33 points off turnovers, holds Central State to a .228 field-goal percentage

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) – The Vulcans allowed only five points in the first quarter and forced nearly 40 turnovers while rolling to an 80-40 win over Central State (Ohio) at the Convocation Center in non-conference play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 4-0 overall after winning its last two games by a combined 70 points. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 1-1 this season under new head coach Cathy Parson.

Sophomore Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) paced four players in double-digits with 13 points, plus added eight rebounds (three offensive) and four steals. Junior Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) scored 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting and led the team with nine rebounds. She also collected four blocks and three steals while playing 23 minutes on Monday.

Junior Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and freshman Juliana Burris (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) both finished with 10 points in the win. Loyd also tallied four assists, three rebounds and two steals after battling first-half foul trouble. Junior Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) recorded a career-high six assists against Central State and classmate Lauren Bennett (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench.

Central State scored the opening basket of the game before Cal U rallied off 17-consecutive points over seven-plus minutes. The Marauders committed 12 turnovers during the scoreless span. The Vulcans posted the final points of the first quarter to spark an 11-4 run to stretch the lead to 28-9 with 5:47 left before halftime. Cal U later scored seven-straight points in the final minutes of the quarter before taking a 39-19 lead at the break.

Midway through the third quarter, the Vulcans mounted a 13-4 rally behind a combined nine points from Hudson and Loyd to extend the lead to 61-24 with 49 seconds left in the quarter. Cal U later stretched the lead to as many as 45 points, 76-31, with 4:16 remaining in the game after posting a 13-3 run with all 13 points by Burris and freshman Talia Gilliard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg).

Cal U made over 55 percent in the second half and finished the game with a .436 field-goal percentage (34-of-78). In comparison, Central State shot at just a 22.8 clip (13-of-57) from the floor and converted 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free-throw line. Both teams finished with 45 rebounds in the contest, while the Vulcans scored 48 points in the paint. Cal U forced 39 turnovers in the victory that led to 33 points.

Central State senior Kenedi London was the lone player to score in double-figures on Monday, as she finished with 12 points off the bench and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.

The Vulcans are idle for over 10 days before beginning PSAC Crossover play at Bloomsburg on Dec. 3.
