Women's Soccer falls at IUP on PK, 1-0

Crimson Hawks sweep series with pair of one-run victories; Cal U attempts eight shots in contest

INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 9) – The Vulcans dropped a 1-0 contest with the lone goal being scored on a penalty kick for the second time this season, as they fell at IUP on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 1-9 overall with a 1-8 mark in divisional action. Meanwhile, IUP improves to 6-3-1 this season behind a 5-3-1 record in conference play.

In the first half, both teams came out aggressive with five combined shots in the initial 15 minutes of action and freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) tallied two early saves. The Vulcans held a 5-4 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks during a scoreless first half.

In the second half, the Crimson Hawks were able to take a 1-0 lead at the 58:41-mark when Hannah Scardina converted a penalty kick. Less than one minute later Cal U threatened to tie the score with junior Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) having an opportunity on net before the shot was stopped by the goalkeeper. At the 77:19-mark, the Vulcans once again threatened before sophomore Cora Wilkins (Zanesville, Ohio/John Glenn) saw her shot sail left of the net.

Cruz registered three total shots with one on goal and junior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) tallied two shots with one on target.

Ouimet finished with three saves while playing all 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks finished with a slight 9-8 shot advantage, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, while the Vulcans finished with a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday Oct. 13, when it hosts Clarion in divisional play at 7:30 p.m.
