Vulcans play virtually entire game a 'man down'; Campbell makes collegiate debut in net

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 9) – The Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss against Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday afternoon after being forced to play a 'man down' for virtually the entire contest after a red card was issued just over two minutes into the contest.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team drops to 1-7-2 this season with a 1-3-1 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 6-3-1 overall behind a 3-0-0 record in conference action.

Both teams were aggressive early in the contest, as a hard collision between junior goalkeeper Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River) and a Griffin player occurred at the top of the box and resulted in a red card being issued to Zabilowicz. Seton Hill applied early pressure on the net with five shots in the opening 20 minutes of action. The Vulcans were able to sustain the attack as the Griffins carded four more shots, three of which were saved by junior goalkeeper Jacob Campbell (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands), as the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Just three minutes into the second half, Anthony Panko took a pass from Kai Pritchard and was able to poke it over the goalkeeper's head to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. At the 49:51-mark, Seton Hill added to its lead when Fletcher Amos took a shot from just inside the box and beat the goaltender to the top right corner of the net, 2-0. The Vulcans applied pressure with senior Negus Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) having an opportunity to cut into the deficit, but his shot sailed over the net. In the 70th minute, the Griffins added an insurance goal when Wilfred Munn was able to tap in a deflection off a free kick from Archie Lock.

Campbell collected four saves while playing nearly the entire game in his collegiate debut.

Seton Hill finished with a 13-4 shot advantage, including a 7-0 lead in shots on goal, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13, as they host West Liberty in non-conference play beginning at 5 p.m.
