CALIFORNIA (Oct. 13) – Behind two goals from junior
Evan Blunkosky (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team captured a 2-1 victory over West Liberty in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-7-2 overall as they closed a four-game homestand. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers fall to 4-8-0 this season while playing their second PSAC team this year.
In the first half, redshirt junior
Diego Rodriguez (Bristol, Pa./Harry S. Truman) played a corner kick to redshirt sophomore
Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) to put a cross into the box and Blunkosky was able to head the ball into the corner of the net to give the Vulcans a 1-0 lead in just the third minute. The Hilltoppers applied pressure with five shots in the half, as Cal U was able to maintain a 1-0 lead at intermission.
After halftime, West Liberty tied the score at the 56:15-mark when Daniel Rovira took a pass from Vitor Otsuka and put his shot through traffic to beat the goalkeeper in the upper right corner of the net. The Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the 68th minute when Blunkosky was able to net his second goal of the contest after he took a cross from Norfleet and put a sliding kick past the goalie to give Cal U a 2-1 lead. West Liberty continued to attack as it tallied eight shots in the half.
Junior goalkeeper
Jacob Campbell (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) recorded the win in his first career start, as he tallied two saves while playing all 90 minutes of action.
West Liberty finished with a 13-5 shot advantage, as both teams placed three shots on goal. The Hilltoppers also posted a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U is idle for over a week before returning to action on Oct. 23, as it travels to Erie, Pennsylvania, to face Gannon in PSAC West action at 7:30 p.m.
