Cal U posts shutout win over Slippery Rock, 2-0

Vulcans claim first victory over The Rock since 2012; Norfleet records first career game-winner

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 27) – Behind two second-half goals, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team captured a 2-0 victory over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 3-8-2 this season behind a 2-4-1 mark in league play. Cal U also captured its first victory over Slippery Rock since the 2012 campaign, a streak spanning 10 games. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 5-8-2 overall with a 2-5 mark in divisional action.

In the first half, the Vulcans were aggressive by registering four shots and two corner kicks in the initial 13 minutes of the contest. Slippery Rock was held without a shot attempt the entire first period as the game remained scoreless at the break.

After halftime, Cal U took a 1-0 lead at the 56:20-mark when redshirt sophomore Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) took a pass from junior Evan Blunkosky (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and was able to put a sliding kick into the top right corner of the net. Off a corner kick from junior Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin), senior Negus Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute as he put a header into the left side of the net for his third goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) recorded his second career shutout after finishing with three saves on Wednesday.

The Vulcans finished with an 8-4 shot advantage, while each team tallied three shots on net, and posted a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown for Senior Day at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility with play beginning at 1 p.m.
