EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 15) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dropped into fourth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings with a 77-53 loss at Edinboro in divisional action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 17-7 overall behind an 11-7 mark in conference action with four games left in the regular season. Cal U has now lost the last six overall meetings in the series with Edinboro, plus have now dropped six-straight meetings at McComb Fieldhouse dating back to the 2014-15 campaign. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 14-8 this season with a 12-6 record in league play.
Senior
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) led the team with 14 points on five-of-eight shooting while playing 21 minutes off the bench. She is averaging 14.0 points over the last three games and has scored in double-digits six times this season.
Sophomore
Ahmya Woodyard (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) added eight points off the bench, while junior
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) totaled six points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals in the loss. Freshman
Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) tied for the team lead with four rebounds and also registered two blocks and three steals while playing a season-high 32 minutes off the bench.
The Vulcans scored the initial basket of the game before being held scoreless for over six minutes, as the Fighting Scots built a 14-2 lead at the 3:09-mark of the first quarter. Edinboro later scored the final five points of the quarter to seize a 19-5 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Fighting Scots mounted a 10-3 run to stretch the lead to 33-11 with 4:43 left before the break. Hahn then made a pair of three-pointers in less than 45 seconds before Edinboro rallied off six-unanswered points and eventually took a 41-20 lead at halftime.
Edinboro scored six-straight points early in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 25 points, 47-22, at the 7:06-mark. The Vulcans later closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to trim the deficit to 54-36. However, Edinboro continued to extend the lead by opening the fourth quarter with a 12-3 rally to take a 66-39 lead with 6:44 left to play. The Fighting Scots eventually led by as many as 30 points before the Vulcans scored the final six points of the game.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field after going just 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots converted 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the floor and went 10-of-20 (50.0 percent) from long range. Edinboro also finished with a 44-28 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans forced the Fighting Scots into a season-high 25 turnovers in the contest.
Senior Michaela Barnes scored a game-high 30 points on 11-of-22 shooting and added six rebounds and four assists in the win. She totaled a combined 66 points in the two meetings against the Vulcans this season. Redshirt senior Cheniya Sharpe recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while freshman Rana Elhusseini finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, when it hosts Seton Hill at the Convocation Center with tip set for 5:30 p.m.
