CALIFORNIA (Feb. 1) – Sophomore
Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) recorded her third career double-double on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans claimed a 76-59 victory over Slippery Rock at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 15-6 this season behind a 9-6 record in league action. The Vulcans were playing their first game in Hamer Hall since Dec. 17, 2017. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 5-16 overall with a 3-12 mark in conference play.
Harrison scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including five-of-six from beyond the arc, on Saturday. She also set a career high with 13 rebounds (five offensive) and added two assists, two blocks and three steals while playing 36 minutes. Harrison leads the team with 5.7 rebounds per game this season while also scoring a career-high 10.2 points per game.
Freshmen
Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) and
Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) both scored 15 points in the victory. Herrington set a career high with 15 points after 5-of-12 from the floor, including three-of-nine from long range. Hudson shot 5-of-11 from the field, including three-of-six from three-point territory, while playing 15 minutes off the bench.
Junior
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) tied her career high with 11 assists and added seven points and nine rebounds on Saturday. Sophomore
Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) posted nine points, six rebounds (four offensive) and three assists in the victory.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the opening minutes, as Cal U held a 5-1 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter. The Rock countered with a 10-2 run over nearly two minutes to take an 11-7 lead at the 3:01-mark of the quarter. Hudson made a three-pointer on the ensuing possession before Slippery Rock scored the final six points of the quarter to hold a 16-10 lead. The Rock extended the lead to 21-12 in the opening two minutes of the second quarter before the Vulcans responded with eight-consecutive points to trim the deficit to 21-20 with 4:43 remaining before the break. Cal U later tied the score at 24-24 on a layup by Jasper at the 2:08-mark before the score was tied at 29-29 at halftime.
The teams traded points for the majority of the third quarter, which featured six lead changes and four ties. The Rock scored six of seven points midway through the quarter to take a 45-40 lead at the 2:44-mark before Herrington made a pair of free-throws in the closing seconds of the quarter to give the Vulcans a 50-49 lead. Slippery Rock held a 55-53 lead with 8:17 remaining before Cal U mounted a 20-0 run over five-plus minutes to seize a 73-55 lead at the 2:20-mark. During the run, Harrison and senior
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) combined for 11 points and the Vulcans made four-of-six from beyond the arc.
Cal U finished the game shooting 32.9 percent (25-of-76) from the field after making 40-plus percent in both the third and fourth quarters. The Vulcans set a season high with 12 three-pointers in the win and converted at a .333 clip (12-of-36) from long range. Meanwhile, The Rock made 40.0 percent from the floor and went just 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from the free-throw line. Cal U held a 48-43 rebounding advantage behind 22 offensive rebounds, while Slippery Rock scored 34 points in the paint.
Junior Daeja Quick scored a team-high 17 points after going 7-of-16 from the floor. Senior Madison Johnson added 15 in the loss, while classmate Brooke Hinderliter recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive).
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 5:30 p.m.
