Women's Basketball tops Clarion 66-46

Vulcans record 21 offensive rebounds; Cal U allows just one field-goal made in second quarter

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 29) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday evening by rolling to a 66-46 win over Clarion at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 14-6 overall with an 8-6 mark in league play. Cal U remains fourth in the PSAC West standings following the opening round of divisional action. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles suffered their eighth-straight loss to fall to 3-17 this season behind a 1-13 record in conference play.

Freshman Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) led the team with 14 points behind a pair of three-pointers and six-of-six from the free-throw line. She also collected four rebounds, one assist and one block in 27 minutes while making her third career start.

Sophomore Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) scored 11 points after going five-of-five from the floor and added three rebounds on Wednesday. Classmate Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) paced the team with 11 rebounds (five offensive) and also posted seven points and four assists in the victory, while senior Citiana Negatu (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) registered eight points, four rebounds and three steals off the bench. Junior Bianca Jasper (Middletown/Middletown) tied her career high with 10 rebounds (four offensive) and added five assists against the Golden Eagles.

Midway through first quarter, the Vulcans scored six of eight points to take an 11-6 lead at the 4:02-mark. Clarion then responded with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 13-13 with 1:11 left in the first quarter before a basket by Jasper gave Cal U the lead at the end of the quarter. The Golden Eagles tallied the opening four points of the second quarter to take a 17-15 lead with 8:53 left before halftime. Cal U then scored 16-consecutive points, including a combined 11 points by senior DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Negatu, to take a 31-17 lead with 1:53 remaining in the second quarter. The Vulcans took a 33-18 lead at the break after limiting the Golden Eagles to only five points in the second quarter after going just 1-of-14 from the floor.

Cal U posted an 11-2 run early in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 44-21 at the 5:39-mark before taking a 49-28 lead at the end of the quarter. The Vulcans stretched their lead to as many as 28 points, 59-31, with 7:15 left to play following an 8-2 rally early in the fourth quarter. Clarion worked the deficit down to 63-44 at the 2:55-mark before Cal U earned the 66-46 victory on Wednesday.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the floor and went 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) from the free-throw line. In comparison, the Golden Eagles shot at a 32.7 clip (16-of-49) from the field and 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the charity stripe. Cal U posted a sizeable 48-33 rebounding advantage behind 21 offensive rebounds that led to 23 second-chance points. The Vulcans also forced 20 turnovers and scored 32 points in the paint in the win.

Junior Ke'Airah Massiah scored a team-high 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while classmate Yndiah Boro posted 11 points and six rebounds in the loss. Fellow junior Yasmin Lewis finished with eight points and six rebounds on Wednesday.

Cal U closes out its homestand on Saturday, Feb. 1, when it faces Slippery Rock at Hamer Hall, beginning at 1 p.m.
