ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Gannon on a penalty kick in the final five minutes of the match on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 2-3 overall with a 1-3 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 3-3 this season behind a 2-3 mark in conference play.
Cal U wasted little time scoring at the 1:26-mark of the first half on a goal from freshman
Elisabeth Engle (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), her first collegiate goal, after she lofted the ball over the goalkeeper. Junior
Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart) collected an assist on the play, chipping the ball to the side of the box, which resulted in the goal. Gannon countered and controlled possession offensively before totaling five shots over nearly 11 minutes. The Lady Knights would tie the contest at 1-1 on a header from Emily Cekella, her third of the year, with an assist by Kayla Bevacqua in the 18th minute. The teams traded possession over the remainder of the first half with Gannon out-shooting Cal U by an 8-2 margin.
The Lady Knights pressured the net early, as junior goalkeeper
Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) grabbed a pair of saves in the opening minutes of the second half. The contest picked up physically, as both teams collected a yellow card over a three-minute span. The Vulcans were forced back defensively as Gannon peppered the net with four corner kicks and three shots, but were unable to find the net. At the 85:45-mark, the Lady Knights were awarded a penalty kick and capitalized with a goal from Megan McCartney to take a 2-1 advantage. The Vulcans were unable to respond late and held without a shot in the second half.
Sinatra recorded five saves in her second start of the season while facing 15 shots in 90 minutes between the posts.
The Golden Knights held a 15-2 shot advantage in the match and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it travels to face preseason PSAC West favorite Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
