CALIFORNIA (Sept. 18) – Playing its first game in over 10 days, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss against Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) in non-conference play on Wednesday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 0-3 overall with all three matches being against teams from different states. Meanwhile, the Redhawks earn their first victory of the year and move 1-3-1 overall.
Cal U controlled possession in the early portion of the contest with four shots in the opening 20 minutes, including a pair on net. Freshman
Philip Washington (Brookhaven, Pa./Penn Wood) and junior
Matt Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) later recorded back-to-back shots on target before the Redhawks took a 1-0 lead at the 31:42-mark when Dylan Ruiz placed a header into the right side of the net. Cal U looked to answer in the 34th minute with pair of shots on goal following a corner kick by Yingling, but were unable to even the score before halftime.
The Vulcans made a goalkeeper change to redshirt freshman
Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) at the start of the second half. Roberts Wesleyan added to the lead in the 51st minute when Johanz Tusiime beat Zabilowicz on a one-on-one opportunity. Cal U later attempted three shots in a span of five-plus minutes before Roberts Wesleyan sealed the victory with a pair of goals in less than 30 seconds. Shaq Rouse scored off a rebound at the 67:12-mark before Alex Perez Vega scored on a breakaway just 19 seconds later.
Cal U finished the game with a 16-11 shot advantage after holding a 9-2 edge in the first half. The Vulcans also posted a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Senior
Joseph Valeriano (Southampton, N.J./Seneca) allowed one goal while facing two shots prior to halftime. In his college debut, Zabilowicz tallied four saves in 45 minutes of action.
The Vulcans are idle for a week before hosting Daemen (N.Y.) on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.
