CALIFORNIA (Sept. 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team closed out the Vulcan Invitational with an undefeated record over the weekend after collecting a pair of victories over West Liberty and Lake Erie (Ohio) in the Convocation Center on Saturday.
With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 5-3 overall after recording a perfect 4-0 mark over the weekend at their home invitational.
Against West Liberty (3-4), Cal U registered a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22) after totaling 11 service aces in the match. Sophomore
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and freshman
Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) each tallied a kill/dig double-double while pacing the team the 11 kills. Burkey also registered 14 digs in the contest and Moehring tallied 13 digs on Saturday. Sophomore
Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) added nine kills on a .421 hitting percentage and senior
Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) totaled eight kills against the Hilltoppers. Sophomore
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with 38 assists and 16 digs, her sixth assist/dig double-double this year.
Junior
Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) paced the defense with 21 digs, while Benson and Burkey notched 16 and 14 digs, respectively, in the win. Moehring also totaled 13 digs and freshman
Kelly Lynch (Boardview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) finished with 12 digs in the match. Freshman
Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) led the team with four service aces, while Benson and Lynch each recorded two aces. The duo of Priore and Cowart defended the net with each player collecting three blocks.
Against Lake Erie (1-7), the Vulcans claimed a 3-1 win (25-11, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18) and posted over a .300 clip in the first and fourth set on Saturday afternoon. Burkey registered a season-high 20 kills on a .365 hitting percentage and 23 digs, her fifth kill/dig double-double this season. Moehring posted 14 kills, 13 digs, and three aces for her third kill/dig double-double this year, while Priore finished with 12 kills on a .393 clip. Benson guided the offense with 41 assists and three aces, her fourth match this season with at least 40 total assists.
Silbaugh once again led the defense with 25 digs, her fourth-consecutive match with at least 20 digs. Burkey recorded 23 digs in the winning effort, while Benson and Moehring added 16 and 13 digs, respectively. Priore, Cowart and junior
Madison Kline (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) each recorded two blocks against the Storm.
Cal U returns to action Saturday, Sept. 21, when it faces West Virginia Wesleyan and Virginia Union in Buckhannon, West Virginia, starting at 11 a.m.
