• Cal U makes its home debut this year on Saturday when it faces Kutztown. Last week, the Vulcans rolled to a 59-13 victory at Saint Anselm after scoring 31 points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Kutztown cruised to a 54-16 win against Assumption after totaling 600-plus yards of offense.
• Cal U forced seven turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns on defense last week to open the season with a 59-13 win at Saint Anselm. The Vulcans forced the Hawks into minus-seven rushing yards on 14 attempts and yielded only one third-down conversion. Sophomore
Noah Mitchell finished with 239 passing yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to senior wide receiver
Jordan Dandridge. Mitchell also connected with junior
Tyson Hill for a 79-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Sophomore defensive back
Jermal Martin, Jr. led the team with seven tackles.
• The Vulcans and Golden Bears are meeting for the fifth time in the last eight years after previously not playing since 1997. Cal U won the last meeting against Kutztown at Adamson Stadium, which was the 2016 PSAC Championship.
• With extensive coaching experience in Eastern Pennsylvania,
Jim Clements is in his sixth season as head coach at Kutztown. He has posted a winning record in each of his five years with the Golden Bears, leading the program to a 27-9 mark in divisional play. Clements helped lead the program to the NCAA Playoffs last year after being tabbed the 2016 PSAC East Coach of the Year.
• Kutztown returns a total of 16 starters from last season when it led the PSAC in total offense and ranked second in scoring offense. Senior quarterback
Collin DiGalbo accounted for six touchdowns in last week's season-opening victory. A dual threat, he has totaled over 6,300 passing yards and 1,300-plus rushing yards in his career while being responsible for 73 touchdowns (25 rushing). The Golden Bears finished with more than 300 rushing yards last week with five players totaling at least five attempts. Senior
Abdul-Hassan Neblett recorded the first 100-yard game of his career after totaling a combined 550 rushing yards the last two seasons. Redshirt freshman
Jake Novak and senior
Jack Pilkerton both made a pair of touchdown receptions last week. Pilkerton set career highs last year with nearly 500 receiving yards and almost 40 receptions. The Golden Bears return seven defensive starters, including three in the secondary. An All-PSAC East First-Team selection, junior defensive back
Shawn Turber-Ortiz led the team last season with 107 tackles and made three interceptions. Senior
Ahkee Cox-Cowan, also an All-PSAC East First-Team defensive back, set the single-season school record with 14 pass break-ups last year and finished with three interceptions. Senior linebacker
Luke Snyder also returns after establishing a career high with over 50 stops last year. On special teams, junior
Dean Krcic averaged 41.6 yards per punt last season and is a two-time All-PSAC East honoree.
• The Vulcans forced seven turnovers last week in their season-opening victory at Saint Anselm, marking their most in a game in recent program history (since 2002). Cal U and Tiffin were the only NCAA Division II teams to record four interceptions last week and the Vulcans are tied for second in the country in turnovers forced. Cal U also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns on takeaways last week.
• Last week, Cal U and Kutztown both opened the year with victories against NE-10 members. Overall, the PSAC posted a 6-1 record against members of the NE-10 last week. Additionally, East Stroudsburg earned its first victory over a FCS program since 1994 with a 24-14 win against Wagner (N.Y.). Last week featured six NCAA Division II teams claiming wins over FCS programs.
• The Vulcans finished with nearly 150 rushing yards at Saint Anselm last week with three players totaling at least 10 carries. Senior
Nelson Brown, who last year totaled the most carries by a Cal U running back since 2006, led the team with 75 rushing yards and 14 attempts. The last time the Vulcans featured three players with double-digit carries was Week 8 of the 2013 season against Gannon.
• Senior wide receiver
Jordan Dandridge scored a pair of touchdowns and posted 72 receiving yards on five catches last week versus Saint Anselm. He entered the year with nine career touchdowns - all in separate games. Dandridge has averaged 5.3 receptions over his last 11 games dating back to the start of the 2017 season.
• For the third time in four years, Cal U offensive lineman
Christian DiGalbo will be facing his twin brother, as
Collin DiGalbo is the starting quarterback for Kutztown. Both brothers are redshirt seniors after serving as the starting center and quarterback at Monsignor Bonner. Christian is in his second year as the starting center for the Vulcans and was an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection in 2018.
• Cal U forced Saint Anselm into negative rushing yards last week in the season-opener. The Hawks totaled just 14 rushing attempts and finished with minus-seven rushing yards after the Vulcans registered three sacks. It marked the seventh time in the last 15 years in which a Cal U opponent has been forced into negative rushing yards with the last occurrence being in Week 9 of the 2016 season versus Mercyhurst.
• The Vulcans scored a dominating 59 points last week in the victory at Saint Anselm, including 45 points during the first half. Cal U forced seven turnovers in the win that were converted into 31 points with redshirt senior
Julian Cox and senior
Lamont McPhatter II both scoring defensive touchdowns. It marked the first time in recent program history (since 2002) in which Cal U scored over 30 points off turnovers in a game.
• Sophomore quarterback
Noah Mitchell tied his career high with three touchdown passes at Saint Anselm last week. He finished with 239 passing yards on 15-of-27 attempts with no interceptions despite not playing in the fourth quarter. Mitchell has thrown three touchdown passes in a game three times during his career, including the season-opener in both 2018 and 2019.
• In last week's win, Cal U allowed Saint Anselm to convert just 1-of-14 third-down attempts. The last time the Vulcans surrendered only one third-down conversion was in a 55-14 victory at Mercyhurst in 2016. Cal U has actually limited opponents to no third-down conversions in a game three times this decade.
• Linebackers
Julian Cox and
Noah Dillow both suffered season-ending injuries in the 2018 campaign. Last week, Cox and Dillow returned to the field and played key roles in the victory at Saint Anselm. Cox finished with five tackles (one solo) and posted a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown. In his first career start, Dillow tallied four stops (two solo), a strip sack and deflected a pass that was eventually intercepted.
• The Vulcans have posted a 21-7 record against PSAC East teams since the start of the 2010 season. During that span, Cal U has tallied an 11-3 mark at Adamson Stadium against Eastern Division program and enters the weekend on a five-game home winning streak against PSAC East teams. The Vulcans earned home victories over the Golden Bears in both 2013 and 2016.
