Cal U posts win over Salem, 15-7

Fairman, Fogle combine for six hits and four RBI; Vulcans score double-digit runs for sixth time this year

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 9) – Four players posted multi-hit games on Tuesday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team secured a 15-7 victory over Salem in non-conference action at Wild Things Park.

With the win, the Vulcans improved to 22-8 this season behind a 12-3 mark at home this year. Cal U has now scored double-digit runs six times this season. Meanwhile, the Tigers fall to 22-17 overall in their third season competing as an independent program.

Individually, senior first baseman Eric Fairman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) finished 3-for-4, including a solo homer, with two RBI, two run scored, one walk and three stolen bases. Fairman continues to lead the PSAC with 29 steals this spring and is now tied with Robert Hedrick (2005-08) for seventh in single-season school history in stolen bases. Junior third baseman Corey Fogle (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) went 3-for-5, including a two-run homer, with three runs scored and sophomore shortstop Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman catcher Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler) tallied two hits, three RBI and one run scored on Tuesday,

In the bottom of the first, the Vulcans established the early lead after Fairman belted a solo homer off the scoreboard in left-center, his fourth of the year, to take a 1-0 advantage. Salem was retired in order in the second before senior designated hitter Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and a ground-out before Stewart registered an RBI single on a line-drive that was knocked down by the first baseman, 2-0. In the third, the Vulcans added to the lead with three runs on three hits. Senior second baseman Nico Marchetti (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) led off with a triple down the right-field line before Fairman delivered an RBI single to left field to extend the lead to 3-0. Fairman stole both second and third before scoring a wild pitch, 4-0. With two outs, Fogle singled to right field and moved to third on a fielding error. After a hit by pitch, Fogle scored during a run-down between first and second to stretch the advantage to 5-0.

The Tigers recorded their first hit of the contest in the fourth inning and scored on a run on a sacrifice fly later in the frame to cut the deficit to 5-1. In the top of the fifth, Salem closed the gap to one run after senior Harrison Hollis launched a three-run homer to left field, his sixth of the season. Following a pitching change, Fogle led off with a ground-rule double down the left-field line before Conte placed runners on the corners with a single up the middle. Stewart then reached on a fielding error that scored Fogle from third to extend the lead to 6-4. Later in the inning, senior center fielder Ben Maudie (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) notched a two-run single through the left side before Fairman was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freshman right fielder Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) followed with a single to left field and Webb drew a bases-loaded walk to stretch the advantage to 10-4.

With one out, junior left fielder Aaron Previsky (California, Pa./California) was hit by a pitch before stealing second and third in the seventh inning. Maudie then drew a walk and stole second before Marchetti posted an RBI on a sacrifice fly, 11-4. Maudie scored later in the frame on a pair of throwing errors, as Cal U took a 12-4 lead. The Tigers countered with three runs on four hits in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 12-7. In the bottom half, sophomore Zach Logan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) registered a single and stole second. Fogle then belted a two-run homer over the scoreboard in left-center, his first of the year, as the Vulcans built a 14-7 lead. Conte followed with a double to left field before Stewart laced an RBI double to left-center, 15-7.

Freshman starter Tyler Bedillion (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) earned the win (2-1) after yielding four runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 6.0 innings (79 pitches). Freshman Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts to close the game. Salem sophomore Carlos Pena was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings (102 pitches).
