MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 29) – The Vulcans opened the spring season on Friday afternoon by dropping a 7-0 match to Towson of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) at the Summit Tennis Academy.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 4-4 overall while playing its first NCAA Division I opponent since April 2016. Meanwhile, Towson improves to 6-10 this season after extending its winning streak to three matches.
The Tigers opened play by claiming the doubles point on Friday after winning both completed matches. Freshman
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasum Grafing) and senior
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) dropped a 6-0 contest at the first position to Alexa Martinez and Yevgeniya Shusterman. At third doubles, freshmen
Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) and
Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) suffered a 6-0 loss to Lucy Gloninger and Jessica Assenmacher.
Towson sealed the match victory by winning all six singles matches at the Summit Tennis Academy. Ganahl dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match at the first position to Martinez while junior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) made her season debut at the second slot and was blanked by a 6-0, 6-0 count by Shusterman. Senior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) was dealt a 6-0, 6-0 loss by Themis Haliou at third singles and Suckling, who was making her season debut, also suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the fourth position to Phoebe Collins. McDaniel fell by a 6-0, 6-0 margin to Gloninger at the fifth slot and Camargo dropped a 6-0, 6-0 contest in her collegiate debut to Assenmacher.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 30, when they face Big 12-member West Virginia at 9 a.m.
