WILSON, N.C. (March 11) – The Vulcans claimed a doubleheader sweep versus Kutztown at Fleming Stadium on Monday afternoon, winning 8-0 and 4-1, highlighted by a combined 5-for-7 performance with two homers and six runs scored from senior center fielder
Ben Maudie (Jackson, Mo./Jackson).
With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team improves to 10-1 this season and extends its winning streak to seven-straight while sweeping a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponent for the first time since 2015. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears drop to 1-9 overall after playing their third doubleheader in three days.
The Vulcans wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning after Maudie led off with a single up the middle. With one out, senior first baseman
Thomas Chisam (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) singled to left field before both runners moved into scoring position after a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Sophomore third baseman
Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) then collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to give Cal U a 1-0 advantage. The Vulcans added two runs in the bottom of the third after senior left fielder
Nico Marchetti (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) laced a triple to right-center and scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Chisam tallied another single and Conte delivered a double down the left-field line to put both players in scoring position. Sophomore designated hitter
Bill Hitman (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) registered a RBI on a ground-out to extend the lead, 3-0. Cal U tallied another run in the fourth frame on an infield RBI single from Marchetti to stretch the advantage to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Conte posted a leadoff single to left field before freshman shortstop
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum,Pa./Deer Lakes) recorded a double down the right-field line to advance Conte to third. Senior catcher
Kristian Webb (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) then notched a two-run single to make it a 6-0 contest. The Vulcans added two more insurance runs in the sixth on four hits to take an 8-0 advantage. Maudie led off with a single up the middle before Marchetti reached on a single to left-center and advanced to second on a stolen base. Chisam posted an RBI on a ground-out before Conte collected an RBI single to center field.
Maudie finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one stolen base, while Marchetti went 3-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored and one stolen base. Conte finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored, plus Chisam went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Damian Clarke (Carlisle, Ontario/Waterdown) earned the win (1-0) in his first start of the season after yielding zero runs on two hits with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings (91 pitches). Freshman
Tyler Bedillion (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) worked 1.0 scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout to close out the game. Kutztown starter Brandon Staub (0-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings (104 pitches)
In Game 2, freshman
Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville) posted a 7.0-inning, complete-game victory in only his second career start. He allowed one run (earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings (89 pitches). He retired the side in order three times and registered nine ground-outs and seven fly-out against the Golden Bears. Kutztown starter Zach Peters suffered the loss (0-1) after yielding eight hits and four runs (all earned) with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings (81 pitches).
In the top of the first, Maudie drew a walk before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Marchetti recorded an RBI on a ground-out to give Cal U an early 1-0 lead. Brosky escaped a base-loaded jam in the bottom half of the inning before the Vulcans scored another run in the top of the third. With one out, Maudie launched a solo homer, his second of the year, over the scoreboard in left field to take a 2-0 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Maudie launched his second solo home run of the game to right field before Marchetti followed with a solo homer, his second of the season, to right field to take a 4-0 lead. The Golden Bears tallied one run in bottom of the sixth on a solo homer to left field from senior Nick Lafferty.
Chisam finished 3-for-3 and Maudie went 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and one walk, plus Webb finished 2-for-3.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12, at Fleming Stadium in North Carolina versus Ohio Dominican with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
