CALIFORNIA (Feb. 9) – Despite three players scoring in double-figures, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team fell by 79-75 margin against Edinboro in the Convocation Centers on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 7-14 this season behind a 5-10 record in league play. Cal U remains in sixth place in the divisional standings and in possession of the final PSAC Tournament spot with six games left. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 7-13 overall with a 4-11 mark in conference action.
Freshman
Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting and added nine rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes of action. He now has totaled four 20-point games this season and ranks third on the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game.
Sophomore
Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) finished with 20 points on 8-of-19 attempts, including 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. He tallied two rebounds and two assists while playing 34 minutes after battling foul trouble. He has record nine 20-point games this season.
Freshman
Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) scored 18 points on 7-of-19 shots and added three rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes of play. Sophomore
Ike Okwara (Lahnam, Md./Friendship Collegiate Academy) notched a season-high 11 rebounds (five offensive) and registered four points in 24 minutes off the bench.
Edinboro claimed an early 11-4 advantage on four-of-six shooting, including three three-pointers, before Cal U closed the gap to 14-10 with 13:32 remaining in the first half. The Fighting Scots responded with a 12-2 run to build a 26-12 lead, while the Vulcans were held to one field goal over a three-plus minute stretch. After a nearly two-minute scoreless drought, MacAdams made a layup to trim the deficit to 26-14 before Edinboro took a 30-15 advantage with 7:43 remaining. The Vulcans countered with 14-2 rally over the final six-plus minutes of the half after knocking down 6-of-11 shots and forcing three turnovers to cut the deficit to 32-29 at the break.
Cal U opened the second half on a 15-5 run after tallying six-of-six from the field, including 10 points from Pegram, to take its largest lead of the contest at 44-37 with 16:15 left. The Fighting Scots made consecutive three-pointers to close the gap to 46-43 before tying the game at 49-49 at the 12:29-mark. The lead would change hands four times over the next four-plus minutes, as the game would remain tied at 62-62 with 7:38 remaining. The Vulcans scored six of the next eight points to hold a 68-64 advantage before Edinboro registered 10-straight points to take a 74-68 lead. Collins trimmed the deficit to 74-71 after knocking down a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining until the Fighting Scots made five-of-seven from the free-throw line to seal a 79-75 victory.
Cal U finished the game with a .469 field-goal percentage (30-of-64) and made just 7-of-31 attempts (22.6 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, Edinboro shot 50.0 percent (28-of-56) from the floor and converted 14-of-30 shots (46.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots held a slight 37-35 rebounding advantage and scored 25 bench points, while the Vulcans recorded 22 points off of 16 turnovers.
Junior Steven Freeman finished with 22 points on five-of-eight from the floor and six-of-nine from the charity stripe. He added two assists and two steals in 20 minutes off the bench. Freshman Turner Kurt recorded 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes, while senior Trey Staunch posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while playing 37 minutes. Sophomore Jaryn Simpson totaled 13 points, three rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes after battling foul trouble.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they host Gannon in PSAC West play, starting at 7:30 p.m.
