GREENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 27) – Despite a double-double from seniors
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) and
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), the No. 17 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team surrendered over 50 second-half points in a 73-60 loss at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 22-4 overall behind a 16-4 mark in league action. However, Cal U secured a first-round bye in next week's PSAC Tournament after earning the second seed from the divisional standings on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 17-10 this season with an 11-9 record in conference play and clinch the fourth seed from the PSAC West with the victory.
Barrett led the team with 20 points and 14 rebounds (five offensive) for her ninth double-double of the year. She shot 10-of-19 from the floor and added three assists, two blocks and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Barrett currently leads the PSAC with both 8.8 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game, plus ranks third in scoring at 21.7 points per game.
Sporio collected her first double-double since the 2017 NCAA Tournament, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds on Wednesday. Junior
DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) scored 13 points (11 first half) while playing 25 minutes off the bench.
The teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter with neither team holding a lead larger than two points, as the game featured seven lead changes and three ties in the opening 10 minutes. Cal U scored the opening five points of the second quarter to take an 18-13 lead with 7:16 left before halftime. Following a basket by the Griffins, the Vulcans countered with five-straight points to extend the lead to 23-15 on a three-pointer by senior
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) at the 4:35-mark. Seton Hill eventually worked the lead down to six points before Hahn scored on back-to-back possessions to give Cal U a 30-21 lead at the break.
The Griffins opened the third quarter on a 13-3 run behind three-of-four from beyond the arc to take a 34-33 lead at the 7:00-mark. Sporio answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession to give Cal U its last lead of the game with 6:45 left in the third quarter. The Griffins later mounted a 10-1 rally to stretch the lead to double-digits at 48-38 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. Cal U trimmed the deficit to 50-46 on a jumper by Hahn in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter before Seton Hill answered with 12-consecutive points to take a 67-50 lead with 3:24 left to play. Sporio converted a three-point play to snap a four-plus minute scoreless drought at the 2:45-mark, but the Vulcans were unable to work the deficit to single digits.
Cal U was held to its second-lowest shooting percentage of the season, making just 34.6 percent (27-of-78) from the floor and 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from long range. Meanwhile, Seton Hill shot at a 40.9 clip (27-of-66) from the field and converted 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from three-point territory. The Griffins also finished with a 52-43 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans scored 32 points in the paint.
Graduate transfer Megan Marecic scored a career-high 30 points of 11-of-22 shooting, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc, and added 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore Cheyenne Trest finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Courtney Cecere collected nine rebounds and five assists.
The Vulcans close out the regular season on Saturday, March 2, when they travel face Clarion at 1 p.m.
