Vulcans post win at Central State, 68-57

Cal U scores over 30 points in the paint, shoots over 60 percent in second quarter

WILBERFORCE, Ohio (Nov. 19) – The No. 13 Vulcans featured balanced scoring with six players scoring at least seven points on Tuesday evening in a 68-57 win over Central State in non-conference play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 5-0 this season while playing teams from three difference conferences. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 2-3 overall after being picked third in the preseason Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Western Division.

Junior Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) led the team in scoring with 15 points on Tuesday and added six rebounds and five assists. She is averaging 16.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 8.0 assists over the last three games.

Senior Monica Burns (New Stanton, Pa./Hempfield) was limited to 11 points after entering play averaging 22.3 points per game this season. Sophomore Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) posted 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in the victory.

Sophomore Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished with eight points and tied her career high with eight rebounds (four offensive). Senior Citiana Negatu (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) added seven points, five rebounds and four blocks, while classmate DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) led the team with nine rebounds off the bench.

The Vulcans scored the opening seven points of the game before the Marauders made their first field goal at the 6:22-mark. Central State later scored six of eight points to cut the deficit to 11-10 before Cal U held a 16-12 lead at the end of the quarter. The Vulcans started the second quarter with six-straight points to take a 22-12 lead with 7:45 left before halftime. Midway through the second quarter, Burns and freshman Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) made back-to-back three-pointers to cap a 10-3 run to give Cal U a 34-20 lead at the 3:50-mark. The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter with the Vulcans holding a 42-28 advantage at halftime.

Cal U started the third quarter with six-straight points before Central State later mounted an 8-2 run to trim the deficit to 53-40 at the 2:57-mark. Jasper made a basket at the buzzer to give the Vulcans a 57-44 lead at the end of the quarter. The Marauders opened the fourth quarter on a 10-2 rally to work the deficit to 59-54 with 5:49 left to play. Harrison snapped a nearly four-minute drought for Cal U without a field goal when she made a three-pointer at the 2:27-mark to give the Vulcans a 65-57 lead. The Vulcans held Central State scoreless for the last 5:15 of the contest to seal the victory.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the floor after being held to 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Marauders posted a .435 field-goal percentage (27-of-62) and attempted just one free-throw attempt. Cal U out-rebounded Central State by a 38-30 margin and scored 14 second-chance points.

Junior Brooke Spaulding scored a team-high 17 points on 8-of-17 shooting, while classmate Sandra Guilford posted 14 points and five rebounds. Senior Takyra Gilbert added nine points, three rebounds and five assists in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23, when it opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play by hosting Lock Haven at 1 p.m.
