Cal U swept at Shippensburg, 3-0

Moehring leads all players with 15 kills; Vulcans tally double-digit aces for fourth time this year

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 5) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team was held to a .111 hitting percentage in a 3-0 loss at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 7-5 overall with a 2-2 record in league play after dropping consecutive matches over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 12-3 this season behind an undefeated 4-0 mark in conference play after beating all four PSAC Southwest Division programs.
 
Sophomore Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led all players with 15 kills and totaled 12 digs for her sixth kill/dig double-double of the year. Junior Madeleine McKenna (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) registered a season-high eight kills on a .250 clip, while freshman Kaylin Burkey  (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) posted six kills and 12 digs versus the Raiders. Sophomore Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) guided the offense with 32 assists and added six digs on Saturday.
 
Junior libero Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) led the defensive effort with 18 digs, while four other players tallied at least nine digs in the match. Cal U recorded double-digit service aces for the fourth time this season after collecting 11 aces at Shippensburg. Sophomore Shelby Alloway (Hardin Northern/Dunkirk, Ohio) and Moehring notched four and three aces, respectively. The Vulcans were also limited to one total block for the third time this year.  
 
Shippensburg opened the match with a 25-19 win in the first set after holding Cal U to under a .100 hitting percentage. The score was tied four times after the initial 12 points of the set before the Raiders scored four of the next five points to take a 10-7 lead. After exchanging the following four points, Shippensburg registered a 6-2 run to stretch the advantage to 18-11. The run was snapped on an attacking error before the Raiders registered five-straight points to hold a 23-12 lead. Cal U managed to score seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 24-19 before Shippensburg claimed the first set on a kill, 25-19.
 
The Raiders established a 2-0 match lead after claiming the second set by a 25-23 margin. Shippensburg tied the match at 5-5 before Moehring tallied back-to-back kills to take a 7-5 lead. Both teams traded the next six points before the Raiders tallied three-unanswered points, 11-10. Following an attacking error, Shippensburg extended the advantage with a 7-2 run to hold an 18-13 lead. The Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 19-17 to force a timeout before the Raiders built the lead to 23-20. After consecutive kills by Cal U, Shippensburg won the second set 25-23 on a pair of kills.
 
Shippensburg completed the 3-0 sweep after a 25-20 win in the third set. Cal U raced out to an 8-2 lead after three kills from Moehring and a pair of aces by Alloway. Following a Shippensburg timeout, the Raiders totaled five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 10-7 before both teams exchanged the next six points. The Vulcans then scored five-consecutive points to establish an 18-11 advantage, but the Raiders countered with 12-unanswered points to take a 23-18 lead. Cal U would tally back-to-back points to cut the deficit to 23-20 before Shippensburg sealed the victory on a pair of kills, 25-20
 
The Vulcans return to PSAC Crossover action on Friday, Oct. 11, when they host Bloomsburg at the Convocation Center, starting at 6 p.m.
