Women's Soccer shutout by Slippery Rock, 4-0

Gobbie tallies six saves for the fifth-straight match; The Rock scores three goals in the second half

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 30) – Facing a regionally-ranked opponent, the Vulcans suffered a 4-0 loss versus Slippery Rock on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
 
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team drops to 3-10-1 this season with a 2-10-1 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 13-3 overall behind a 12-2 record in divisional action. Slippery Rock was ranked third in the Atlantic Region in the initial NCAA regional rankings released this afternoon.
 
Slippery Rock peppered the net with four shots in the initial 12-plus minutes of the contest, but failed to put one of goal during that stretch. The best scoring chance of the match for the Vulcans came on a cross into freshman Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch), who saw her shot saved by The Rock goalkeeper in front of the net. Slippery Rock continued to control possession over the course of the first half and forced sophomore goalkeeper Carly Gobbie (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) into a pair of saves in a nearly 10-minute span. The Rock eventually broke through in the 33rd minute on a goal by Sofia Harrison, her fifth of the season, into to the right corner from 25 yards out, 1-0. Slippery Rock tallied three more shots late in the half before heading into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
 
In the second half, The Rock kept consistent offensive pressure and Gobbie tallied another save at the 62:16-mark to keep Cal U in striking distance. Slippery Rock extended its lead in the 68th minute on a goal by Rachel Edge, her 12th goal of the season, after scoring off a deflection into the middle of the net, 2-0. Just over two minutes later, Edge scored her second goal of the game for The Rock at the 69:38-mark on an assist from Kayla Swope to stretch the lead to 3-0. Slippery Rock would score its final goal in the 87th minute, as Edge completed the hat trick on an assist from Jordyn Minda. Edge is now leading with PSAC with 35 points this season and is also tied for the conference lead with 14 goals.
 
Gobbie collected six saves for a fifth-straight match after facing 24 total shots in 90 minutes of action.
 
Slippery Rock held a staggering 24-1 shot advantage, while also posting a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
 
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when it travels to face Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC West action, starting at 12 p.m.
