NOTES
• Cal U will play a consecutive road game on Saturday when it travels to No. 19 IUP for the 11th-annual Coal Bowl. The Vulcans earned a 24-7 win at Edinboro last week, while the Crimson Hawks claimed a 56-24 victory at Mercyhurst in the first week of divisional play.

• Cal U yielded just over 150 yards of total offense while opening PSAC West action with a 24-7 victory at Edinboro. The Vulcans forced the Fighting Scots into minus-four rushing yards on 21 attempts and Edinboro managed only six first downs. Sophomore linebacker Israel Xavier tied for the team lead with seven tackles and set career highs of 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks. Sophomore quarterback Noah Mitchell finished with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-43 attempts and junior Tyson Hill set a career high with 136 receiving yards on eight catches.

• The Vulcans and Crimson Hawks initiated the Coal Bowl in 2009 and the home team has won the last seven meetings. Cal U previously won four-straight road games against IUP from 2005-11.

• A longtime assistant with the program, Paul Tortorella is in his third season as head coach at IUP. He served as interim head coach in 2017 and has posted a 25-4 mark as head coach of the Crimson Hawks, highlighted by the PSAC Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Semifinals in 2017. He previously spent over two decades as the defensive coordinator at IUP.

• IUP returns 17 starters from last season and enters the weekend ranked among the top 10 in the country in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Crimson Hawks feature a prolific pair of running backs in senior Samir Bullock and junior Justice Evans that have combined for nearly 5,000 rushing yards and almost 50 total touchdowns in their careers. Evans leads the team this season with 232 rushing yards, while Bullock has added 195 yards and three touchdowns. IUP features a senior transfer at quarterback in Quinton Maxwell, who passed for over 1,750 yards in his career at Ohio. He sits sixth in the country with a 71.6 completion percentage while totaling 935 passing yards and 11 touchdowns this season. The Crimson Hawks boast an electric playmaker in redshirt sophomore wide receiver Duane Brown. He sits second in the nation with 10 total touchdowns (seven receiving, three rushing) on just 27 touches this year. Brown leads the team with 359 receiving yards and has made at least one touchdown reception in all four games. The Crimson Hawks are anchored defensively by senior linebacker Damon Lloyd, a two-time, All-PSAC West First-Team selection. He has totaled nearly 300 career tackles and leads the team with 24 stops this season. Fellow senior Nick Amendola has posted 16 tackles and 3.5 sacks in his third year as a starter, while sophomore defensive lineman Dajour Fisher leads the team with 4.0 sacks this fall. On special teams, Brown is averaging nearly 12 yards per punt return.

• This weekend marks the 11th anniversary of the Coal Bowl between rivals Cal U and IUP with the home team winning the last seven meetings. The Vulcans hold a 7-3 edge in the series while posting a 2-3 mark at George P. Miller Stadium in the Coal Bowl. This marks the eighth time in Coal Bowl history that at least one team has been ranked in the AFCA Top 25 poll (both teams ranked in 2012, 2016, 2017).

• The Vulcans forced Edinboro into negative-four rushing yards on 21 attempts last week, marking the second time this year in which a Cal U opponent finished with negative rushing yards. Cal U leads NCAA Division II and sits second among all NCAA divisions this season in rushing defense, allowing just 17.3 yards per game. The Vulcans have also surrendered only one rushing touchdown on 97 attempts.

• Cal U will be a facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time since upsetting then-No. 2 IUP in last year's Coal Bowl. The Vulcans have posted a 5-5 record against top-25 teams under fourth-year head coach Gary Dunn. Cal U is looking to snap a nine-game road losing streak against top-25 teams, as its last road victory over a nationally-ranked program was the 2010 season opener at then-No. 11 Saginaw Valley.

• The Vulcans controlled possession for over 40 minutes in last week's victory at Edinboro. The last time Cal U maintained possession for at least 40 minutes in a game was Week 4 of the 2010 season at Clarion. The Vulcans pace the PSAC and rank No. 16 in the country with an average time of possession of 33 minutes, 20 seconds.

• Sophomore quarterback Noah Mitchell recorded his first 300-yard game of the season last week at Edinboro. He finished with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-43 attempts in the victory. Mitchell has thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this season and is tied for No. 10 in the country with 11 touchdown passes. The Ohio native has now eclipsed the 300-yard mark four times in his career.

• Through four weeks, redshirt senior linebacker Julian Cox leads the PSAC with 7.0 TFL and 1.8 TFL per game this season. He tied a season high with seven stops and recorded 1.5 TFL at Edinboro last week. Cox has recorded at least 0.5 TFL in every game this year after suffering a season-ending injury in the 2018 opener. The New Castle native previously tallied a combined 11.0 TFL while playing at Albany from 2015-17.

• Junior wide receiver Tyson Hill set a career high with 136 receiving yards on eight catches last week at Edinboro. The eight receptions are the most by a Cal U player this season and are just one shy of tying his career high. Hill ranks fourth in the league and No. 12 in the nation this fall with 409 receiving yards while averaging 19.5 yards per reception behind a team-leading eight catches of at least 20 yards.

• The Vulcans continue to lead NCAA Division II with both 10 interceptions and 15 turnovers forced this year. Redshirt freshman linebacker Noah Dillow made an interception in the end zone at Edinboro last week to become the eighth different player with at least one interception this season. IUP has committed a combined four turnovers over the last three weeks after committing four turnovers in the season-opener.

• Senior running back Nelson Brown totaled 58 rushing yards and one touchdown on 22 carries last week. He leads all active players in NCAA Division II with 779 career attempts and is tied for second with 42 rushing touchdowns. Brown, who has logged at least 20 carries in a game 24 times in his career, enters the weekend ranked fourth among active players with 3,512 rushing yards.

• Last week, sophomore linebacker Israel Xavier established career highs with 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks, plus matched his career high of seven stops. He ranks second in the PSAC this fall with 4.5 sacks and is also tied for fourth with 5.5 TFL. Xavier sits third on the team with 19 tackles this season after previously playing at Saint Francis, which is coached by former IUP All-American and NFL veteran Chris Villarrial, in 2017.

• Freshman punter Joey Hood averaged 41.3 yards per punt at Edinboro and placed three of his seven punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line. He also set a career long of 51 yards and forced three fair catches last week. For the season, Hood ranks second in the PSAC this season with an average of 41.9 yards on 16 punts.

• Cal U allowed just 154 yards of total offense and six first downs at Edinboro last week. The last time the Vulcans surrendered less than 10 first downs in a game was in Week 7 of the 2012 season. Additionally, Edinboro converted just 1-of-12 third downs in the contest to mark the second time this season an opponent has managed to convert only one third down against Cal U.
