Women's Soccer suffers loss at Clarion, 2-1

Vulcans finish with 14-6 shot advantage; Galbreath scores team-leading third goal this year

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 16) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team tied the score late in the first half before dropping a 2-1 contest at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday night.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-8 overall with a 2-8 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles snap a nine-game losing streak to move to 2-9 this season behind a 1-9 record in conference play.

Cal U pressured the net with three shots in a span of eight minutes early in the contest before Clarion tallied its first shot attempt in the 25th minute. The Golden Eagles followed with another shot less than a minute later before back-to-back corner kicks in the 26th minute. Clarion took a 1-0 lead at the 37:43-mark on a goal by Andie Hill off a double assist. The Vulcans answered just over one minute later when freshman Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) recorded her team-leading third goal of the season.

Galbreath placed another shot on goal in the opening two minutes of the second half before the Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead at the 48:00-mark on a goal by Hill. In the 61st minute, Cal U threatened with a pair of corner kicks and a shot attempt by freshman Elisabeth Engle (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). Just over a minute later, Clarion looked to add to the lead with a shot on target that was saved by junior Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) off a corner kick. The Vulcans continued to attempt to tie the contest with four shots, including two on goal, in a 10-minute span late in the game.

Cal U finished with a sizeable 14-6 shot advantage, while both teams recorded four corner kicks.

Sinatra made one save while facing six shots in 90 minutes of action.

The Vulcans continue their road trip on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to face Edinboro at 5 p.m.
